Whether it’s bending our minds in Inception and Memento or bringing one of the most beloved superheroes off the page of a comic book and onto the big screen in The Dark Knight trilogy, Christopher Nolan’s interests can be seen clearly in the types of art the director makes. Right up there with trippy sci-fi and heroes vs. villains, it’s obvious that Nolan has a soft spot in his heart for historical epics. Most recently, audiences joined him for an arms race in 2023’s Oppenheimer and next, they’ll travel back to Ancient Greece in The Odyssey. But today, time is running out for Nolan fans to transport themselves into the foxholes of WWII before Dunkirk leaves Peacock on December 1.

There are a lot of jaw-dropping and nearly unbelievable stories from WWII that could be explored in film, but Nolan saw plenty of promise in the events that unfolded on the shores of the titular French town. Shifting its perspective from the sandy beaches to the planes in the sky and the ships on the water, Dunkirk follows a string of characters as they all attempt to survive one of the war’s most infamous chapters. Giving a platform to, at the time, up-and-coming performers, Nolan enlisted a call sheet that included Fionn Whitehead (Emily), Tom Glynn-Carney (House of the Dragon), Harry Styles (Don’t Worry Darling) and Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) alongside established stars such as Jack Lowden (Slow Horses), Kenneth Branagh (Murder on the Orient Express), Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders), Tom Hardy (Venom), Mark Rylance (The Outfit), James D’Arcy (Agent Carter) and Aneurin Barnard (The White Queen).

Like so many of his other features, Dunkirk was an overnight hit for Nolan, soon amassing nearly $534 million against its $100 million production budget. Thanks to its massively talented lineup of performers, incredible cinematography, and immensely moving storytelling, the movie was a favorite among critics, landing a whopping eight nominations at the Academy Awards and taking home three. The title went on to be a favorite on that year’s award circuit, finding acknowledgment at other prestigious settings including the Critics’ Choice, Golden Globes, and even the Grammys.

What’s Next for Christopher Nolan?

Nolan’s next project will stay in a similar vein as Dunkirk, as he looks to bring the tale first penned by Homer to the big screen in The Odyssey. With Matt Damon leading the charge as Odysseus, the film boasts a massive cast that also includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal and Robert Pattinson. Like Oppenheimer, the movie is looking to secure box office domination over the summer with a release date set for July 17, 2026.

Head over to Peacock before December 1 to stream Dunkirk.
