TOHO’s Chief Godzilla Officer Keiji Ota unveiled the upcoming series at Anime Festival Asia Singapore 2025 with concept art and shocked everyone with one major reveal. For the first time in the franchise, the story will feature a boy who possesses the power of Godzilla. This is not the usual psychic link that has popped up in older films, and it is not another case of humans trying to build a new MechaGodzilla. This time, a human boy will have the actual powers of the King of the Monsters!
Soon after the announcement, the concept art from the festival went live on the TOHO Godzilla X (formerly Twitter) account. The post teases the question “Is the boy a human or Godzilla?” and the artwork shows a human kid with a body that looks very close to the iconic monster using the famous Atomic Breath attack. Interestingly, Godzilla can also be seen in the background. It is not clear if the boy absorbs Godzilla’s abilities and the original monster ceases to exist, or if they exist together in the same world. Both ideas open doors to new story arcs that the franchise has never tried before.
The new anime is backed by TOHO Animation and animated by Studio Orange, with Igloo Studio joining as co-producers. Studio Orange already worked on the franchise with Singular Point in 2021, so the team is familiar with the world and its style. Producer Kiyotaka Waki said the studio has built up many techniques since Singular Point and hopes to pour that passion into the new series. Apart from the basic synopsis, TOHO has not shared the release date, cast, or further story details yet.
The New ‘Godzilla’ Anime Might Finally Fix a Longtime Franchise Problem
The biggest problem that many Godzilla movies struggle with is the human characters. Too frequently, the human stories feel flat, and they rarely match the energy of the kaiju action. The franchise has been trying to fix that problem for decades, and this new direction might be the answer it has needed all along. Giving a human character kaiju powers creates a stronger link between the human story and the monster side of the franchise, and it gives humans a larger stake in the conflict, opening the door for better drama and character growth.
There is also a real chance that the idea might not stop with Godzilla’s powers. Other characters might gain abilities inspired by different kaiju. The boy with Godzilla’s abilities might face someone with Rodan’s or Ghidorah’s powers. The story could even add a romance subplot where the Godzilla boy falls in love with someone who has Mothra abilities.
The new concept has also led to a lot of comparisons with Kaiju No. 8 and other popular shonen battle series. Kaiju No. 8 just wrapped up Season 2 on Crunchyroll this year, and it absolutely dominated the rankings on the platform. That success showed that audiences enjoy stories where humans gain monster-like powers and fight in fast-paced, high-stakes battles. It makes sense that TOHO saw a chance to bring some of that energy into the Godzilla world. If the new anime hits the mark, this concept could become a core part of the franchise. And it might also find its way into future American Godzilla movies, and finally solve the long-running issue of human characters feeling dull next to the giant monsters.
The rest of the details about this anime are still under wraps. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
