On paper, assembling the world’s greatest action heroes from the 80s and 90s (the peak time for the genre if you ask us) and throwing them into a movie seems like the greatest idea on the planet. And, in the case of the 2010 movie The Expendables, it kind of was. After all, who wouldn’t want to see the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Terry Crews, and others throw down in a star-studded, high-octane action fest? Although the first movie might have struck a high note with fans, the mistake was keeping a good thing going for too long, with the film series weakening with every new installment. However, if you’re in the mood for a good old-fashioned feature-length brawl, you’re going to want to rush over to Pluto TV before the end of the month. Why? Because the first three movies in The Expendables franchise are currently part of the free streamer’s catalog, but will take their leave on December 1.
Setting up what would ultimately become a franchise-starting film, Stallone paired with writer, David Callaham, to bring the world the very first Expendables movie in 2010. Along with starring in the flick, Stallone also directed, adding yet another genre piece to his extensive directorial catalogue. The first film follows Stallone’s Barney Ross and the rest of a group of mercenaries dubbed The Expendables as they take on their latest mission, which sees them attempting to overthrow a Latin American dictator. As secrets begin to pop out of the woodwork, the plot thickens for Barney and his men, who find themselves in a stickier situation than they had bargained for.
The Expendables Movies Had High and Low Notes at the Box Office
With a box office haul of $274.5 million, The Expendables proved to be just the thing that audiences around the globe were looking for when hoping to reconnect with the action heroes of their past. Sensing a hit on their hands, Lionsgate quickly pushed for a sequel, which arrived two years later in 2012. Raking in even more bucks, the sequel earned a staggering $315 million at the global box office which, you guessed it, paved the way for a third film to arrive another two years later in 2014.
Unfortunately, by this point, the hype surrounding the franchise began to die down, with the third film losing a solid $100 million from its earnings as compared to its predecessor and leaving its global run at $214.7 million. Finally, Expend4bles (which is not part of Pluto TV’s current lineup) slammed the door on the coffin shut for the film series’ foreseeable future with an abysmal worldwide haul of just $51 million.
Stick to the glory days and head over to Pluto TV before December 1 to stream the first three Expendables movies free of charge.
