At the time of writing, Guillermo del Toro's highly anticipated Frankenstein adaptation is still battling for the top spot on Netflix's U.S. streaming charts and is the most-streamed movie on the platform worldwide. A passion project many years in the making, Frankenstein has earned plenty of praise from critics and audiences, with Jacob Elordi as the Creature and Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, alongside del Toro's signature eye for visual genius receiving most of the plaudits. However, the film isn't without its detractors, with many unfavorable comparisons being made to del Toro's magnum opus: Pan’s Labyrinth.

Because of Frankenstein's success and these inevitable comparisons, Pan's Labyrinth is also having its own streaming surge, becoming one of the most-watched movies on the iTunes charts. Pan's Labyrinth's legacy began way back at its Cannes Film Festival unveiling, where it broke the record for the longest standing ovation. Winning Oscars for Cinematography, Art Direction, and Makeup, as well as a trio of other nominations, the film was a critical darling and boasts a "certified fresh" 95% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The critics' consensus on the site reads, "Pan's Labyrinth is Alice in Wonderland for grown-ups, with the horrors of both reality and fantasy blended together into an extraordinary, spellbinding fable." A synopsis for Pan's Labyrinth reads:

"In 1944 Spain young Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) and her ailing mother (Ariadna Gil) arrive at the post of her mother's new husband (Sergi López), a sadistic army officer who is trying to quell a guerrilla uprising. While exploring an ancient maze, Ofelia encounters the faun Pan, who tells her that she is a legendary lost princess and must complete three dangerous tasks in order to claim immortality."

'Pan's Labyrinth' Is Returning to Theaters

There are many beloved titles set to celebrate their 20th anniversary next year, with Pan's Labyrinth among them. It was recently announced that, in celebration of this anniversary, the beloved horror fantasy flick would return to the big screen. The film will also receive plenty of accompanying media, such as podcasts and featurettes, discussing its legacy and beyond. Del Toro said in a statement, "Pan’s Labyrinth turns 20 years old, and in Cineverse we have found the perfect partner to make it live again on the big screen and in new and improved home presentations." He continued, "Cineverse is committed and bold, and their track record for reaching a maximum audience is magnificent. Together we will reconnect the generations that have shared the film through the years and long to experience it theatrically again."

Pan's Labyrinth is an iTunes hit. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming stories.
