When we need an escape from our reality, we often turn to movies that are sometimes out of this world. No, literally. Science fiction has been a universally beloved genre because it allows us to escape from now and head somewhere else. Perhaps it's a version of our reality, or maybe it's traveling back in time. Maybe we're heading to another planet or experiencing a life with artificial intelligence roaming free. Whatever it is, science fiction provides an exciting departure.
If you're like me, then you likely stare at your Netflix home screen for a good period of time, confused about what to watch next. With so many options to choose from, half the battle is selecting the right film to satisfy your instant desire for entertainment. Luckily, Netflix has an array of titles throughout cinema history to choose from. Between recently added titles (Blue Beetle) and franchises that are leaving soon (Back to the Future), there is so much to choose from. We have four incredible titles that might be perfect for your next sci-fi Netflix viewing.
4 'They Cloned Tyrone' (2023)

Not all science fiction films have to be terrifying thrillers. Infusing some comedy into the mystery can be the draw right there! Such is the case for Juel Taylor's They Cloned Tyrone. Making his feature film directorial debut, They Cloned Tyrone follows an unlikely trio comprised of a drug dealer, a pimp, and a sex worker, who stumble upon a vast government conspiracy to clone Black people in their neighborhood for social control. After Fontaine (John Boyega) is shot, only to wake up the following morning seemingly unharmed, he teams up with Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx) and Yo-Yo (Teyonah Parris) to uncover the conspiracy that the government uses specific items, like fried chicken and grape juice, to control the population to assimilate them into a more "desirable" suburban class system.
As a commentary on systematic racism and the historical exploration of Black communities, They Cloned Tyrone's dark humor is eerie and deliberate. The laughs are paired with insightful concepts. The film draws upon real-life examples of government conspiracies, including the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, as inspiration for the story. Partly an homage using the lens of 1970s blaxploitation films and 1990s sci-fi thrillers at the film's roots, They Killed Tyrone brings you into a terrifying reality that brings laughs while frightening you about the tense reality that could be. They Cloned Tyrone is a clever, impressively enchanting film that is richly imagined. Taylor's vision, paired with an outstanding ensemble that also features Kiefer Sutherland and David Alan Grier, sets this film above the rest. It might be Boyega's best performance to date. If you're someone who relies on Rotten Tomatoes scores, a 95% rating should be a reason to check They Cloned Tyrone out!
3 'Spiderhead' (2022)

Perhaps you've been taken by Chris Hemsworth more than before, following your viewing of Chris Hemsworth: A Road Trip to Remember, and you're eager to watch more from his body of work. If you've already gone through the entire Thor library, the next on the list should be Netflix's original film, Spiderhead. Directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, Spiderhead is inspired by the dystopian short story "Escape from Spiderhead" by George Saunders. Also starring Miles Teller of Eternity, Spiderhead is a gripping sci-fi thriller about prisoners who volunteer for an emotion-altering drug experiment in exchange for shorter sentences. Two of the inmates, Jeff (Teller) and Lizzy (Jurnee Smollett), form a connection while being subjected to the tests by brilliant scientist Steve Abnesti (Hemsworth). By examining an individual's free will, Spiderhead brings morality and ethics to the forefront.
The film, which became another collaboration between Teller and Kosinski following Top Gun: Maverick, is daring and risky, using its science-fiction elements to set the thematic tone. Hemsworth brings his signature charisma in a manner that is simply terrifying. He's rightly smarmy, leading the film to great heights. A conversation about big pharma and our pill-popping culture, Spiderhead is meant to push our bounds of how far we mean to go when our emotional stability is involved.
2 'The Martian' (2015)

Ridley Scott has always known how to make a space thriller. As the brains behind Alien, Scott has never shied away from transporting audiences to fantastical places. In 2015, he returned to space with the extraordinary The Martian. Based on Andy Weir's 2011 novel, the film follows astronaut Dr. Mark Watney (Matt Damon), who is presumed dead and accidentally left behind on Mars after a sand storm. Using ingenuity and scientific knowledge, he survives the harsh environment, cultivates food, and manages a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. As the team on land races to create an impossible rescue plan, the mission is to bring Mark home.
Earning numerous accolades, including seven Academy Award nominations, The Martian is one of Scott's most underrated epics. Behind Damon is a brilliant ensemble with the likes of Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, and many more who bring this science fiction masterpiece to life. A thrilling and surprising adaptation of the bestselling book, The Martian provides Damon with the ability to stay grounded during an emotionally trying situation. For those wondering about scientific accuracy, The Martian provides a solid depiction of what Mark would have faced and been able to successfully achieve.
1 'Subservience' (2024)

One of the most fascinating actresses of the generation is Megan Fox. Her career has spanned from raunchy horror films to major action franchises, but one of the most interesting entries on her growing resume is the 2024 science fiction thriller Subservience. After construction worker Nick (Michele Morrone) purchases a domestic AI android named Alice (Fox) to help his family following his wife's (Madeline Zima) heart transplant at the hospital. At first, Alice is helpful, but over time, Alice begins to become possessive of Nick, developing a dangerous obsession that turns violent. Believing she's eliminating threats to the family, Alice is on a mission of her own as the AI goes rogue.
Though it has some sci-fi flaws and similar ideals to M3GAN, Subservience is a major vehicle for Fox. Perfectly cast as the robotic caregiver, her stoic demeanor paired with her natural beauty makes Fox the right fit for the role, carrying the weight of the film on her shoulders. Even if you can figure out where the plot is leading you, it serves as a terrifying reminder of where the future of artificial intelligence may be heading.
