One milestone movie in the Monsterverse is the 2014 Gareth Edwards-directed Godzilla, which rebooted Toho’s long-running franchise. With Edwards’ touch, the fan-favorite kaiju rose to the status of a force of nature and has now spawned a new, successful franchise. The film's visual effects awed audiences while the story tugged at their hearts, making it a brilliant watch. Now, the movie just got more accessible this December.

This December, Godzilla is coming to Netflix. The movie follows Navy bomb expert, Ford (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), who is forced to go to Japan to help his estranged father, Joe (Bryan Cranston), on an unimaginable mission. Both men find themselves in an escalating crisis when Godzilla rises from the sea to combat malevolent adversaries threatening humanity's survival. The balance of spectacle with a humane story made Godzilla a commercial and critical hit. It earned $529.1 million worldwide and a 76 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

While Cranston’s performance got universal praise, the cast is full of talented actors, including Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins, and David Strathairn. The film spawned a successful franchise with follow-up titles including Godzilla: King of Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

What Do We Know About the Next 'Godzilla x Kong' Movie?

The next movie in the franchise is titled Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, which will be directed by Grant Sputore. The cast includes a mix of new and returning members, including Kaitlyn Dever, Dan Stevens, Delroy Lindo, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Sam Neill, and Matthew Modine. While most details are being kept under wraps, Modine previously shared his experience of filming scenes with Godzilla with Collider’s Maggie Lovitt: “That was pretty exciting. Oh, to work with Godzilla.” As for his digitally rendered scene partner, the actor emphasized the importance of grown-ups playing pretend,

“When I was working on Godzilla — that’s what I was gonna say — I kept waiting. I was like, wait a minute, Godzilla is not here! I’m looking at Godzilla and King Kong as if they’re there. And when you go to drama school, there’s exercises you do where you come out, and you have to see things that aren’t there. So I was happy to pretend that Godzilla was there. I did the movie because I wanted to meet Godzilla.”

Godzilla stomps on Netflix on December 1. Godzilla x Kong: Supernova roars into theaters March 26, 2027. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
