'Tis the season to get decorating! With the holiday season upon us, many HGTV fans are looking to their favorite personalities for tips and tricks about decorating. Jonathan and Drew Scott are known for their brilliant ideas, but they have also been quite vocal about things that they do not care for. This year, they are requesting that you retire this "cheesy" Christmas decor: excessive signage.

It may seem obvious to deck your halls with decor that literally screams "Merry Christmas," but the Property Brothers have had it with the trend. “You have to make sure it’s classy. You don’t want something tacky. It can get real cheesy, real fast,” said Jonathan. Though home designers may not appreciate the request, the twins have you covered with alternatives that help you spell out the holiday joy, lettering not included.

When it comes to holiday decorating, it's personal. Just like any decor you add to your home, it reflects who you are and what you like. That being said, not every trend is right for everyone, but some traditions have become antiquated. Jonathan and Drew have a naughty list of holiday no-nos, with cheesy decor at the top. Part of the reason they recommend worded décor is that it cheapens the allure. Spelling out your favorite holiday messages is too obvious. Their recommendation is to design your space with decor that evokes the holiday magic naturally. Whether it's colors that bring out the joy of Christmas, there are iconography that exude the season in a more timeless fashion.

Now, when it comes to color, they remind you not to be beholden to decorating strictly with classic Christmas colors. That's right, red and green are not required. Drew shared, "Whatever your personality is, bring it out in your holiday decor." You can tell that color palettes have evolved and home designers are taking new holiday risks with Christmas colors. Baby pink has become a prominent design choice for those who want a subtle yet unique option. For a cozy option, try natural tones, like brown and beige, with a pop of green. That palette pairs well with those who have utilized a farmhouse-chic home design. Whatever you choose, it's up to you! Just don't overdo it with the glitter. The Property Brothers are trying to save you from your future self, as it's nearly impossible to get it out of your house.

Perhaps their boldest and most controversial suggestion comes from the tree you select. For many families, it may be tradition to head out to a tree farm to select the perfect tree for your home. But they have a better option that doesn't require you to head out in the cold to pick a pine. Head out to your local Michaels and select an artificial tree. It may be a shocking decision, but there is a method behind their madness: no messy pine needles and dying branches. Take it a step further, select an artificial tree with lights already included. Less manual labor and dealing with untangling string lights.

Jonathan and Drew Scott Put Family First For Christmas

Christmas is a big tradition for the Scott family. As their family has expanded over the years, they still find time to put family first. Just like many of us, we have our family traditions that bring out the nostalgia of childhood. Sharing on their website, the Scott family brought fans inside their favorite memories and traditions. Drew revealed that their parents weren't into buying expensive decorations, so they made everything. He revealed it was hours of cutting intricate patterns for giant paper snowflakes that helped them become the creative types we know them as today.

As far as when to decorate, that is a universal debate across the country. Though they are Canadian, they have opinions on whether it's appropriate to put the tree up before Thanksgiving. Speaking to People, they put their flag down in the snow and said earlier is better. “I mean, day one of Christmas is November 1st,” revealed Drew. “The moment Halloween is done, I flick a switch, and all of my lights turn to Christmas.” Meanwhile, Jonathan doesn't care about the critics. He and his fiancée, Zooey Deschanel, are well-known for an early tree. As he put it, “I think people can express themselves however they want to express themselves.” Now, there is one caveat to Christmas time decorations. “Outside, I'll wait until after Thanksgiving, and we'll take down our harvest display, and we'll switch everything on the outside over to Christmas,” Jonathan revealed. Though they won't judge you for putting your decor up, they will judge you for what you put up. No cheesy decor!

Property Brothers is available to stream on HBO Max.
