D&D Eberron: Forge Of The Artificer - New Rules & Buffs For Artificers

Artificers in Dungeons & Dragons have special crafting abilities, and one of the class’s main features just got a huge buff that changes the game.

The new Dungeons & Dragons sourcebook, Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, is set to be officially released for all in December, though its contents are already available for some, such as Master Tier members of D&D Beyond. As is implied by its name, the book focuses on the Artificer class, bringing adjustments and new characteristics, updated to the 2024 rules. The book presents several Artificer subclasses to D&D, including a brand-new one called the Cartographer.

Beyond that, however, the sourcebook updates a series of different species, like the Kalashtar, Shifter, and the ever-versatile Changeling. There are a few campaign setup options for you and your party to explore Eberron, too, using the classic fantasy mechanics in a partially steampunk world. You can also use new D&D feats in Forge of the Artificer, many of which tie in with the setting’s themes.

Artificer Infusions Are Buffed In D&D 5e 2024 Rules

Infusions Don’t Technically Exist Under That Moniker Anymore

However, one of its most notable changes is to the very foundation of Artificer as a class. In the 2014 rules, one of the Artificer’s main gimmicks was the ability called Infusion. In the updated 2024 rules with the release of Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, Infusions cease to exist – at least, under that moniker. Infusions have now been rebranded as part of the Replicate Magic Item class feature.

As was the case with Infusions before, Replicate Magic Item allows you to learn different plans from a select table of items that increase at specific level thresholds. The essence behind building new magic items remains untouched, but there is one major change that is a huge buff to what is considered the Artificer’s best class feat. With the new Eberron book, Artificers no longer require the base item to transform it into a magic one.

In the 2014 rules, for example, an Artificer needed a Shield so that their Infusion feat could craft it into a Shield +1. Now, with the update, Artificers can essentially create a magic item out of thin air, simply by using their Tinker’s Tools, which they can obtain as part of their starting equipment. As such, as early as level 2, Artificers in D&D 2024 rules can create items like a Shield +1, a Weapon +1, or even a Bag of Holding without any extra components.

New Infusion Rules In D&D Artificer Book Forever Change The Class

DMs Can Still Demand Components Should They Feel The Updated Mechanics Are Broken

The change to how Artificers create magic items is a big one, and it forever changes how the entire party can gear up and prepare themselves for tougher encounters or more complex narrative situations. Of course, it’s still up to the DM’s discretion to require a component for certain items, should they feel it’s too broken in D&D for an Artificer to simply create a magic piece of gear, for example.

Even so, if your DM is a stickler to the rules, they may not be able to deny you spawning a magic Shield +1 out of thin air with the updated rules. If you’re a fan of the steampunk style with hints of noir, schemes, and pulp-action adventures, the new Eberron: Forge of the Artificer sourcebook in Dungeons & Dragons may be built for you.
