Never underestimate the power of an RPG that vaguely looks like Final Fantasy. Although not every clone is created equal, this one seems to be doing quite a bit right.
It helps that it's backed by a massive publisher, and one that has run a free-to-play game for many years with great success. Oh, and it looks gorgeous to boot, and is conveniently on Steam.
Soulframe Is A Gorgeous New Free RPG
Digital Extremes Is Onto Something
After many years of supporting Warframe, Digital Extremes is entering the fantasy arena with the similarly-named Soulframe. As a fantasy action RPG, you'll play as an Envoy, and take out enemies bent on taking over the world. It's available to wishlist on Steam, and outside of a few alpha and test periods, it doesn't have a release date yet. Although it was initially slated for 2025, we're cutting it a bit close now that we're nearing December, so it's entirely possible we won't see Soulframe proper until early 2026.
The main thing to take note of is that Digital Extremes seems to have used everything they've learned so far to craft a dazzlingly beautiful game, with lovely particle effects and a ton of personality. The fact that it seems to owe a lot to Warframe is a positive, since the publisher is generally adept at creating fair free-to-play experiences.
While the game isn't officially out, Founder's packs are available now on the official site. There are cosmetic rewards for Soulframe's cast members, as well as a weapon skin crossover for Warframe (Envoy's Sphere Longsword). Packs will also be prorated based on what you purchase over time.
Digital Extremes says you have "many months" to buy these Founder's packs, and that they will warn players before removing them. Also, while the Soulframe team is entirely focused on PC development right now, founder's packs will be added back into the game for the console launch at some point in the future.
The Final Fantasy Vibes Are Strong
Hopefully It Delivers
There are elements of The Witcher and Final Fantasy in Soulframe's aesthetics, which is a big selling point for anyone unfamiliar with Digital Extreme's prior work. The visual style communicates pretty much everything it needs to, especially with the glowing magic emanating from player characters and the often-dark fantasy setting.
It's a nice break from the sci-fi-heavy world of Warframe, and fantasy fans will likely flock to it to give it a shot when it finally launches. From what it looks like so far, Final Fantasy and even Witcher fans should feel right at home in Soulframe.
