Jurassic World: Chaos Theory has come to an end in spectacular fashion, with its series finale paying homage to the legendary ending of Steven Spielberg’s original big-screen blockbuster Jurassic Park. While most of Chaos Theory season 4 focuses on the escapades of its human characters, there is time for one last dance with the franchise’s most iconic dinosaur.

In fact, the unexpected appearance of a Tyrannosaurus Rex in the series finale is the ultimate climactic encounter, harking back to Jurassic Park’s first movie ending 32 years ago. It wouldn’t be the first time an animated Jurassic World show has referenced this ending, either.

Four and a half years ago, the series finale of Chaos Theory’s forerunner, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, performed a similar trick. But it’s hard to argue with this affectionate homage to the climax of what’s still the best movie in the Jurassic franchise, all these years later.

Chaos Theory has set itself apart from the rest of Jurassic World in other ways. Most notably, the complex interpersonal dynamics between the Nublar Six make for compelling viewing in themselves, while the series created an all-time great cartoon villain in the Handler. Still, as the finale’s best moment illustrates, dinosaurs are the real stars of the show.

Jurassic World: Chaos Theory’s Finale Sees A T. Rex Save The Nublar Six From Raptors

The fourth and final season of Jurassic World: Chaos Theory ends with a climactic car chase scene, as the show’s notorious Atrociraptors hunt down the Nublar Six as they speed towards Biosyn Valley’s airfield in their car. The raptors have the scent of blood in their nostrils, because of the wound Ben Pincus suffered back in episode 5.

When the car gets stuck in the mud, the Nublar Six are surrounded by these hungry predators, and it appears as though they’re done for. Suddenly, the ground begins to shake, and seemingly from nowhere a Tyrannosaurus Rex – known to the group as Rexy – emerges from the darkness of a nearby forest.

It immediately picks up a raptor and carelessly tosses it aside, before the other raptors jump on its back. The ensuing struggle between these dinosaurs allows the Nublar Six to flee in their car, and make it through a security door safely before continuing on to the airfield.

Even when it looks for a brief moment as though Darius Bowman might have met his fate, as an Atrociraptor pounces on him while he’s opening the security door for the car, it’s the King of the Dinosaurs who saves him. Two more T. Rexes, Buck and Doe, join Rexy in the nick of time to fight off the raptors, while Darius and the others escape.

This Climactic Scene Is A Direct Homage To Jurassic Park’s Legendary Ending

In having Rexy, Buck and Doe intervene to save the Nublar Six from raptors, Chaos Theory is paying direct homage to the legendary T. Rex scene at the end of Jurassic Park. Although this scene was almost cut from the franchise’s first movie, it’s since become the defining image not only of the film, but of dinosaur blockbusters in general.

The scene begins with Jurassic Park’s main characters, played by Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Ariana Richards and Joseph Mazzello, fleeing Velociraptors by climbing onto a dinosaur skeleton in the entrance hall of the movie’s titular animal park. Once they descend to the ground, they’re hemmed in by two raptors, with no possible means of escape.

That is, until a T. Rex arrives right on cue, to pick up a raptor in its mouth and sling it across the hallway. The other raptor promptly jumps on its back, just like in the Chaos Theory series finale.

With this battle between the dinosaurs allowing Alan Grant and his group to flee the scene, they exit the park and jump into the back of an all-terrain vehicle driven by Richard Attenborough’s John Hammond. Neill then utters the immortal words, “Hammond, after careful consideration, I’ve decided not to endorse your park.”

At the very same moment, the T. Rex finishes off the Velociraptors in the entrance hall. It lets out a roar as the banner reading “When dinosaurs walked the Earth” falls from the ceiling.” It’s no wonder that this picture-perfect scene is now the most iconic in the history of the Jurassic franchise.

Chaos Theory Even Works John Williams’ Theme From Jurassic Park Into The Scene

In the precise instant that Jurassic Park’s T. Rex swoops into the scene to pick up a raptor, the instantly recognizable “Theme from Jurassic Park” begins playing in the background. Jurassic World: Chaos Theory uses this same piece of John Williams music to soundtrack the moment when T. Rexes Buck and Doe arrive to save Darius from the Atrociraptor.

The employment of this musical motif at such a critical point in the scene is a conscious piece of foregrounding, which underlines to the viewer that what they’re watching is a tribute to the original Jurassic Park ending. It’s a superbly executed callback, which suits the action on its own terms as well as being a perfectly-timed reference.

The Tyrannosaurus Rex Is The Ultimate Hero Of The Jurassic Franchise

As Jurassic Park’s most climactic scene exemplifies, the T. Rex is the ultimate star of the franchise. Director Steven Spielberg indicated as much when he decided to write this scene late into production, making radical changes to the final pages of the script in the process.

According to Jurassic Park’s production designer Rick Carter, Spielberg told the crew that the T. Rex is “the hero of the movie” (via Netflix’s The Movies That Made Us). The attention which the Jurassic Park scenes featuring this gigantic Tyrannosaurus garnered upon its release completely vindicated Spielberg’s assessment.

Since then, the number of other dinosaurs the T. Rex has fought in the Jurassic movies has almost reached double figures, without taking Camp Cretaceous and Chaos Theory into account. The franchise has proven beyond doubt that, in popularity terms at least, the Tyrannosaurus Rex truly is the King of the Dinosaurs.

As tempting as it might have been to leave the T. Rex out of Jurassic World: Chaos Theory’s series finale, such a decision would have denied viewers the climax they most want to see. Even if the show’s homage to Jurassic Park isn’t especially original, it still works as well as it ever did.
