These three HBO Max miniseries had fantastic endings, but the stories definitely could have kept going for another season. The long list of HBO miniseries includes some of the best TV shows ever. As much as the streamer is known for its long-form TV shows, its miniseries may be of even higher quality.

The miniseries is just a fantastic length for storytelling. TV shows can go on too long, and you might end up losing the essential qualities you started out with after too many seasons. Movies can feel a bit too short sometimes, or are forced to tell stories briefer in scope.

With a predetermined number of episodes, miniseries rarely overstay their welcome, and if you're looking for a show with a satisfying ending, miniseries are a good bet. Still, there are a handful of miniseries, even those special ones on HBO, that I would tune into for another season.

The Penguin (2024)

The Penguin seemed like a show that would simply not work. How could you make a series about one of the most unlikable characters in the Batman rogues' gallery and still get the audience to care about him? Well, have Colin Farrell slap on loads of prosthetics as the gangster; that should get people interested.

This eight-episode miniseries is one of the few shows about an antihero I have ever seen where the protagonist is not a shade of grey, but truly a bad person. The only sympathetic things we discover about Oswald Cobb are not enough to absolve his many sins, making for an exciting, funny, and probing character study.

The end of The Penguin is a fantastically striking exclamation point to the series, ensuring that we will never mind seeing Batman punching the Penguin in the face. That's why I would love to see a second season of the show. I need more of this version of Gotham told with such precision.

Mare Of Easttown (2021)

While it's true we sort of got Mare of Easttown season 2 when showrunner Brad Ingelsby debuted Task in 2025, I would still love another season with Kate Winslet's hard-drinking, cynical, and sarcastic detective. Who knew an English actress could affect a Delco drawl so well?

The series is set in the fictional town of Easttown, Pennsylvania, and follows DI Mare Sheehan, a former high school basketball star who's barely keeping her life together after the death of her son. Keeping her distracted is the recent murder of a teenage mother who seems to have made a lot of enemies in town.

Mare of Easttown had a wonderful ending that neatly wrapped up the story, but more importantly, completed Mare's seven-episode arc. Another season could feature a reformed version of Mare, still sardonic as always, but now with a little more to live for. I'd like to see that Mare solve some crimes.

Maybe I just want Damon Lindelof to write another show, but I still think a second season of Watchmen is warranted. The series, a sequel to Alan Moore's comic and Zack Snyder's 2009 film adaptation, shows a world post-alien squid explosion and Dr. Manhattan's disappearance.

In the near future, things have changed. While vigilantes are still outlawed, some law enforcement officers have taken to wearing masks and taking on secret identities because of violence committed against them by hate groups. One in particular is ironically inspired by a misreading of Rorschach. Angela Abar (Regina King) is one of these officers.

Angela's story is perplexing, heartbreaking, thrilling, and absurdly funny as it draws in many of the characters from the original comic before its dynamic and impressive ending. I have to know what happens next in this HBO Max miniseries and how Angela moves on in a new world she helped create.
