Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World has become a global streaming hit. The 2003 film stars Russell Crowe as Jack Aubrey, a captain in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars.
Now, 22 years after its original release, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World ranks seventh on HBO Max's global Top 10 movies for today, November 25. It ranks below The Conjuring: Last Rites in first, Wicked, Weapons, The First Purge, Red One, The Last Duel, and above Heartbreak Ridge, Arthur the King, and The Woman in the Yard in 10th.
A Top 10 movie in 14 countries this week, mostly in Southeastern Europe and the Balkans, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is not on HBO Max in the United States, though it is available to rent or buy on Prime Video from only $3.79.
Directed by Peter Weir – a six-time Oscar nominee for Witness, Dead Poets Society, The Truman Show, and more – Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World follows Russell Crowe as a daring British captain during the Napoleonic Wars who drives his ship and crew to the brink as they chase a powerful French warship across South America.
Co-written by Peter Weir and John Collee, the film's story and characters are loosely based on Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey–Maturin series, which includes 20 novels chronicling Jack Aubrey's naval adventures.
The cast also includes Paul Bettany as the ship's surgeon, marking his second collaboration with Russell Crowe after A Beautiful Mind (2001), in addition to James D'Arcy, Chris Larkin, Robert Pugh, Max Benitz, Max Pirkis, Lee Ingleby, Richard McCabe, Ian Mercer, Tony Dolan, David Threlfall, Billy Boyd, Bryan Dick, Joseph Morgan, George Innes, Patrick Gallagher, John DeSantis, and Mark Lewis Jones.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World received much critical acclaim, resulting in an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviews widely praising Russell Crowe's rugged charisma and the expertly crafted adaptation of Patrick O'Brian's novel.
The movie made over $211 million at the box office against its $150 million budget and won two Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Sound Editing. It received 10 total nominations, including for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup, and Best Visual Effects.
Earlier this year, ScreenRant declared Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World the "best tactical military movie of all time," as it "realistically portrays naval warfare and shows how a smart commander can triumph."
