As the SEC tilt looms, head coach Josh Heupel revealed his thoughts on Commodores quarterback Diego Pavia, a potential Heisman Trophy finalist.
“Yeah, just another year of development, command of what they’re doing offensively. Certainly has the ability to use his feet and make plays," Heupel said. "He’s thrown it extremely well. He’s continued to get better throughout the course of the season in being efficient with the football and has created a bunch of big plays. But his ability to be part of the run game as well is a huge part of what they do offensively."
While the two programs get ready for the final game of the regular season, the Volunteers announced a major change before the contest.

On Monday, Nov. 24, the school announced the immediate retirement of live mascot Smokey XI.
"The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, announces the retirement of Smokey XI from official mascot duties. Since being named to serve as the university’s beloved mascot, Smokey XI has worked hard to adapt to the energetic atmosphere of game day at Neyland Stadium," the school announced.
"Despite the extensive efforts of his handlers, trainers, and veterinary team over the past two years, Smokey XI’s reserved temperament continues to affect his comfort in public outings. For his well-being and happiness, Smokey XI will immediately step away from mascot responsibilities and enjoy a quiet, peaceful retirement with his pack — his brother, his dad Smokey X and the Hudson family.
The school will not immediately replace Smokey XI with Smokey XII, but has plans for a new live mascot for the 2026 season.
