By Maria Azzurra VolpeShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberIn a viral TikTok video, a dog owner wonders why her golden retriever is all wet after being outside early in the morning. Then she lets him in and realizes what has actually happened to him.
The hilarious clip, shared in September under the username @channyd5, shows the wet pup outside the door, looking a little sad and defeated, as he sits down waiting for his owner to finally let him in.
"Happy Monday. I was wondering how my dog was THIS wet from morning dew," the post writes in the caption. Then she realizes what’s just happened: "Let him inside the house and it turns out he was sprayed by a skunk."
Skunks usually spray to repel potential predators, including dogs, even those that are unlikely to hurt them.
...Humane World for Animals says that if your dog gets sprayed by a skunk, the first step is to keep them outside while you prepare a cleaning solution.
Check their eyes for irritation and rinse with cool water if needed. Use a fresh mixture of 1 quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, ¼ cup baking soda, and 1 teaspoon liquid dish soap—never store this mix in a closed container.
Wearing gloves, gently wash the dog with this solution, avoiding their eyes, then rinse thoroughly. Follow up with a normal pet shampoo and rinse again. After washing, towel-dry them and keep them somewhere warm to avoid chills.
If skunk spray has gotten on your clothes, wash them in a cold wash with laundry detergent and half a cup of baking soda.
To remove skunk smell from skin, use the same peroxide-baking soda-soap mix, rinse well, and apply a moisturizer to prevent dryness.
