Each generation has its own version of the Dark Knight on the big screen, ranging from Lewis Wilson to Robert Pattinson. While there are many versions and tones to choose from, the Tim Burton movies are both a milestone and a benchmark of how the Caped Crusader’s story can be told. So, for fans who want to revisit the Burton movies and the following '90s Batman movies by Joel Schumacher, December will be a good month.

Burton’s Batman, Batman Returns, and Schumacher’s Batman Forever and Batman & Robin will be available on Paramount+ ahead of Christmas. It’s a rare occasion when Batman movies come to a new platform other than HBO Max, the permanent home for DC heroes. Burton directed Batman and Batman Returns, starring Keaton, which set a distinct tone for the hero. He brought in the dark gothic aesthetic, gritty tone, and a focus on the psychological complexity of Bruce Wayne and his alter ego. Jack Nicholson brought weight to Joker, proving a menacing villain on screen. Building on the film’s world and characters, Batman Returns is even darker and weirder, with complex villains with their duality and tragic stories.

Later, when DC decided to move to a more family-friendly tone, Schumacher was brought in and Val Kilmer donned the cape and cowl for Batman Forever. Schumacher’s approach was colorful and campy, which did not bode well. Despite being a box office hit, it received mixed reviews. For the follow-up, George Clooney replaced Kilmer, and Chris O'Donnell joined the cast as Robin. The movie was a complete failure, with fans and critics discarding it completely. Nonetheless, years later, the movies have gained a cult following and are enjoyed for the same campy, cartoonish feel by some fans.

What Do We Know About ‘The Batman II’?

After Pattinson donned the cape and cowl for Matt Reeves’ The Batman, fans have been eagerly waiting for his return. The movie has faced multiple delays, but finally, the script has been locked in with the original cast set to return. Collin Farrell, who plays the Penguin, previously shared his excitement about returning for the sequel with Collider:

"I love that world. I mean, I loved it as a fan of film since Batman ‘66. I grew up watching that, and Burgess Meredith was my first Penguin, and then Danny DeVito was my second Penguin. Then Chris Nolan's work, of course, was extraordinary in that universe. But to see how Matt [Reeves] has re-envisioned a world that's unique enough and still honors the struggles of that city and the psychological struggles of the character of Bruce Wayne, and Batman, and who is the shadow of who — is Bruce Wayne the real guy, or is Batman? Just to be part of that world… Honestly, just to be in something that takes place in Gotham, where a character called Bruce Wayne and Batman exist, is such a joy for me."

All four Batman movies arrive on Paramount+ on December 1.
