The festive season is all but in full swing, and families of film lovers across the world are ready to indulge in their annual favorites. From Elf to It's a Wonderful Life, the same titles return to our watchlists year-on-year, with few proving as enduring and popular as Chris Columbus’ Christmas classic, Home Alone. Already, at the start of November, the classic yuletide tale of one child under siege from two evil adults and the traps he lays to keep them at bay had already returned to the Disney+ streaming charts.
The best-loved performance in Macaulay Culkin's career, the franchise only features his hilariously wise Kevin McCallister in the opening two installments: Home Alone (1990) and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992). However, in keeping with the Christmas spirit of returning home, Culkin has now spoken about a possible return to the franchise and how it might play out. Speaking during his ongoing A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin tour, the former child star pitched a new Home Alone movie that sees his son turn trap-setter. "It would have to be just right," he admitted, before launching into his pitch.
"I’m either a widower or a divorcee. I’m raising a kid and all that stuff," he said. "I’m working really hard and I’m not really paying enough attention and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me and then I get locked out. [Kevin’s son] won’t let me in... and he’s the one setting traps for me." He added that the story would be "some sort of metaphor" for Kevin's relationship with his child. "[He has to] get 'let back into his son’s heart' kind of deal," he said, with fans sure to feel enticed by this potential reversal of the original film's premise.
Chris Columbus Is Not On Board With Another Home Alone Movie
Although millions of fans and now Culkin seem interested in returning to the festive favorite Home Alone franchise, sadly, Columbus is not on board. "I think Home Alone really exists as, not at this timepiece, but it was this very special moment, and you can’t really recapture that," the director admitted in a previous interview. "I think it’s a mistake to try to go back and recapture something we did 35 years ago. I think it should be left alone."
Could Macaulay Culkin make a Home Alone return? Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for the latest updates.
