There are so many beloved characters in Baldur's Gate 3 that are the hot topic of conversation, such as Shadowheart, Karlach, and Astarion, as well as the other origin characters to a certain extent. But BG3's list of amazing characters extends well beyond the core lineup, and there are countless NPCs with extremely compelling stories that deserve more attention.
Whether it's Madam Lucretious, the flirtatious high elf necromancer from the Circus of the Last Days, or Bhaalspawn and murder tribunal mastermind Sarevok, there's no shortage of side characters/NPCs with deep backstories, fascinating dialogue, and compelling arcs.
Madam Lucretious
BG3's Most Fabulous Necromancer
A smiling Lucretious with open hands in a screenshot from Baldur's Gate 3.
Madam Lucretious may only appear briefly in Baldur’s Gate 3 during Act 3, but she leaves a lasting impression that makes her one of the most underrated NPCs in the game. As the dramatic ringmaster of the Circus of the Last Days, you'll remember her as the flamboyant and flirtatious necromancer commanding a troupe of undead performers with effortless charisma.
Her flamboyant personality, sharp humor, and flair for theatrics make every interaction memorable, but she also acts as more than simple comic relief. Lucretious introduces one of BG3’s most iconic quests: tracking down the scattered pieces of Dribbles the Clown.
Lucretious as a character showcases the game’s dark yet whimsical nature at its best. Despite her limited screen time, she adds depth and a uniquely vibrant energy that players rarely forget, even if she’s seldom discussed.
Zorru
A Minor Character With Major Impact
Zorru is among the earliest NPCs you meet in BG3, providing a brief look at what to expect from Tieflings after players begin their journey. A refugee fleeing Elturel after the city’s fall, Zorru has endured raids, displacement, and faces accusations at every turn.
His caravan was repeatedly attacked during the chaotic exodus, and he witnessed githyanki riders slaughter innocents along the Risen Road, an encounter that left him traumatized and deeply resentful of their kind.
When the player first meets him on the way into the Emerald Grove, he’s wary, exhausted, and fiercely protective of his fellow refugees. Players can humiliate him early on if they so choose, but his account of the githyanki becomes a pivotal moment in Lae’zel’s storyline. Zorru is a tenacious and quietly important character that deserves to be part of the conversation.
Oliver
A True Victim Of The Shadow-Cursed Lands
Baldur's Gate 3 Angry Shadow-Cursed Oliver
Oliver is one of Baldur’s Gate 3’s most haunting and underrated characters, a child whose tragic storyline leaves a lasting impact on players. Found in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, Oliver at first appears to be an innocent boy playing hide-and-seek, but the truth behind his existence is much darker.
Oliver is a fragmented spirit left behind after his family was slaughtered and corrupted by Ketheric Thorm’s forces. Desperate for companionship, he uses illusion magic to recreate parents who can no longer protect him, clinging to a game that shields him from unbearable grief.
Despite appearing in only a single side encounter, Oliver embodies how emotionally devastating the Shadow Curse is, making him one of BG3’s most unforgettable and often overlooked NPCs.
Harper Meygan
Yonas' Secret Admirer
Players first encounter Harper Meygan when entering the Shadow-Cursed Lands from the Grymforge entrance and triggering the scene where Yonas turns undead and attacks the Harper party. Later, she can also be found kneeling in front of Yonas' shrine alongside Harper Karrow, assuming they survive the ambush.
You can return Yonas's Harper Blade to Meygan at the shrine near Last Light Inn and receive some gold as a reward.
Many players don't realize that speaking with Harper Meygan reveals that she secretly was in love with Yonas, but never had the chance to tell him before the curse took him. It's a truly tragic love story, with Meygan more or less fading into the background as the game progresses.
Shovel
The Sneakiest Familiar
Shovel bows in camp in Baldur's Gate 3.
Shovel is one of the most unexpectedly delightful characters in BG3. An undead familiar, this quasit has more personality and pizzazz than many popular NPCs, Shovel is a potentially permanent summon and one of the few you'll find with such a well-developed backstory.
Revived by the player from a grave in the Blighted Village, Shovel proudly recounts his past life and untimely death, offering a surprisingly deep history, with hilarious and sassy dialogue to boot. As the only summons with an elaborate draconic backstory, Shovel is a testament to BG3’s attention to detail.
Commander Lightfeather
Quickly Now, There's A War On
Commander Lightfeather spreads his wings in a screenshot from Baldur's Gate 3.
There are plenty of hilarious encounters with popular animals in Baldur's Gate 3, from the infamous His Majesty to the one and only Tav's best friend, Scratch. However, I'd argue one of the best animal characters that doesn't get enough love is Commander Lightfeather, head carrier pigeon at Sword Coast Couriers in Rivington.
You'll have the chance to speak with Commander Lightfeather during the "Find the Missing Letters" quest in Act 3, where he'll tell you of his fallen comrades found slain around the area at the hands of Tara, Gale's mysterious and conniving feline companion. Commander Lightfeather is an honorable soldier of the highest regard, and is definitely deserving of the rank.
Philomeen
Watch Your Step
Philomeen is the spirited deep gnome with the Runepowder Vial found hiding in the Grymforge area, and she's easily one of the most fascinating characters in terms of the Duergar vs. Deep Gnome conflict. Philomeen is not messing around anymore, and players need to handle the situation delicately if they want to survive the interaction without her going nuclear.
Philomeen is a Deep Gnome with an equally compelling storyline as the oft-discussed Barcus Wroot or the leader of the Ironhand Gnomes, Wulbren Bongle. While she doesn't get quite as much screen time, Philomeen helps contextualize Nere's cruelty and the need for the Deep Gnome resistance.
Mystra
Way More Than Gale's Ex-Lover
Gale and Mystra meet to speak in Baldur's Gate 3
Mystra is one of Baldur’s Gate 3’s most fascinating characters, yet isn't really part of the conversation outside of Gale's storyline. She's one of the few deities who actually makes an appearance, and is the only God with a dedicated cutscene where players can actually engage in conversation.
As the Goddess of Magic and Gale’s former mentor (and lover), she is neither a villain nor benevolent guide, but a divine figure navigating the consequences of empowering mortals. While her brief scenes illuminate Gale’s motivations, insecurities, and tragic flaws, Mystra as a character is as complex as they come.
Despite being a god, Mystra feels nuanced and human, shaped by duty, dealing with regret, and struggling with restraint. Her layered presence enriches BG3’s lore and goes beyond shaping one of its most important character arcs.
Lyrthindor
What's With All The Rats?
After 400 Hours In Baldur’s Gate 3, I’ve Learned To Never Trust The RatsScreenshot by Jessica Mills-Cox
Lyrthindor is easily one of the strangest characters in BG3, and you might only recognize him as the swarm of annoying rats scurrying about the Gauntlet of Shar. Despite being a bit difficult to discover if you don't know what you're looking for, Lyrthindor has a fascinating backstory and is essential to understanding Yurgir and Raphael's eternal feud.
Lyrthindor is a "secret" Dark Justiciar who has essentially turned himself into a bunch of rats and, by Raphael's design, has made it impossible for Yurgir to fulfill his contract. Players can choose to eliminate Lyrthindor and take on swarms of rats, ending Yurgir's contract, or can strike a deal with him in exchange for some paltry loot.
Sarevok Anchev
Arguably The Best Character In Baldur's Gate
While hardcore Baldur's Gate fans understand Sarevok's relevance to the larger BG universe and past installments, as a personal favorite character, I'd argue he's criminally underrated and might even be the best character in the game in terms of depth of lore. Sarevok is found in the Murder Tribunal in Act Three, and is a legendary Bhaalspawn that players are certain to run into during a Dark Urge playthrough.
Sarevok is actually an evil mastermind, manipulating the Dark Urge into eliminating Orin the Red in order to make it easier for him to become the one and only Bhaalspawn. As far as intricately written character arcs go, Sarevok's extends across Baldur's Gate games and is expanded perfectly throughout Baldur's Gate 3.
