The New York Mets are backed against the wall this offseason. They whiffed on the postseason this year after adding a lot last offseason. This winter, they need to make some big moves to avoid similar disappointment next year.
But the Mets need to retain their own stars, like slugger Pete Alonso, before they can improve the team. Alonso is sitting in free agency and could sign a massive deal with a different contender if the Mets aren't careful.
Zach Mentz of Cleveland.com recently projected Alonso would sign a massive five-year, $135 million deal in free agency this winter.
..."The Mets’ all-time franchise leader in home runs, the Polar Bear is as consistent as any power hitter in MLB," Mentz wrote. "His free agency market collapsed last winter, so he signed a one-year deal to return to the Mets. But now Alonso, who led the NL with 41 doubles this season, is in a much better position to sign a long-term deal. Will it be in New York?"
Alonso settled on a short-term deal last winter, but he put together a great season this year. That production, paired with a shallow infield market, should help him net a huge deal.
The Mets need to retain or replace Alonso this winter or else they're going to be fighting an uphill battle to make the postseason next year. Alonso is a fan favorite in Queens, so the front office should look to bring him back if Mentz's projection is accurate.
