KPop Demon Hunters might be dominating the Netflix charts, and the Wicked sequel might be about to leave the box office changed For Good, but Grease is still, and forever will be, the word. Simply one of the best movie musicals of all time, the 1978 romantic comedy directed by Randal Kleiser features one of the best-recognized soundtracks ever put to film, and two iconic lead performances from John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.
Just three years before the film celebrates its 50th anniversary, Grease is once again back in the streaming charts. At the time of writing, Grease is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Pluto in the U.S. Sporting a superb ensemble cast full of many career-defining performances, although the film just missed out on including Elvis Presley in its line-up, Grease is the ultimate feel-good movie whose legacy is still growing long after it first debuted. Although some critical reception was initially mixed, the film has since become highly celebrated among both critics and audiences, even being selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. A synopsis for the movie reads:
"Experience the friendships, romances and adventures of a group of high school kids in the 1950s. Welcome to the singing and dancing world of "Grease," the most successful movie musical of all time. A wholesome exchange student (Olivia Newton-John) and a leather-clad Danny (John Travolta) have a summer romance, but will it cross clique lines?"
'Grease' Was a Huge Box Office Hit
Grease might be one of the most celebrated movie musicals of all time today, but how did it fare upon its initial theatrical run? Produced for a reported budget of $6 million (you need only look at the flying car scene to see why), Grease returned an enormous 65.7 times this investment, with a global total of $394 million. Split between a domestic haul of $188.6 million and a further $205.6 million in overseas revenue, the film was the highest-grossing movie of 1978, worldwide, internationally, and domestically. To this day, even in the light of the many toe-tapping blockbuster hits to have come since, Grease is still one of the 20 highest-grossing movie musicals of all time.
The John Travolta-led movie musical Grease is a streaming hit on Pluto and is available to watch now. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
