After finding success in front of the camera as one of Hollywood’s most popular leading men, George Clooney took the Clint Eastwood approach in 2002 when he first sat down in the director’s chair for Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. His work helming the Sam Rockwell-led espionage flick sparked a new passion in him that continues to this day, with the Batman & Robin star’s latest foray into filmmaking coming through 2023’s The Boys in the Boat. In the middle of his directing career (so far), Clooney took on a non-fiction tale straight from the darkest days of WWII with The Monuments Men. Sadly, for those hoping to see the movie completely free of charge, time is running out, with The Monuments Men set to be wiped from Pluto TV’s catalogue on December 1.

In case the 2014 project flew under your radar, The Monuments Men is a take on Robert M. Edsel and Bret Witter’s 2007 novel, The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History. If the title of the book didn’t fill in the gaps for you, the storyline centers around the team of Allied soldiers who were tasked with ensuring the survival of artifacts, art, and other important items during the Second World War. Putting their lives on the line for the sake of preserving history, the group did everything in their power to beat the Nazis to various locations to gather the treasured objects before their opponents could steal — or even worse — destroy them.

It should come as no surprise that with Clooney at the helm of the film, a wide array of A-list stars jumped at the chance to work with their revered friend and peer, who also held down a leading role in the film. Filling out the ensemble of warriors in constant turmoil over historical pieces of art is a call sheet that includes Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting), John Goodman (The Righteous Gemstones), Cate Blanchett (Thor: Ragnarok), Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey), Jean Dujardin (The Artist), Bob Balaban (Waiting for Guffman) and Bill Murray (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania).

What’s Next for George Clooney?

From what we know of the next steps in his career, Clooney doesn’t have any other directorial projects lined up at this time. He does, however, have a brand-new movie releasing before the end of the year. Currently playing in select cinemas, Jay Kelly is slated for a December 5 release on Netflix and, along with Clooney, features the talents of Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, Billy Crudup, Riley Keough, Patrick Wilson, and more. The project, which is directed by Noah Baumbach, centers on a famous actor (Clooney), who begins to question the decisions that he’s made over the years that have led him to the place that he’s at in life.

Head over to Pluto TV before December 1 to stream The Monuments Men.
