Zootopia 2's Post-Credits Tease Explained By Director & Producer

EXCLUSIVE: Zooptopia 2 director Jared Bush and producer Yvett Merino explain the meaning behind the post-credits teaser scene in the animated sequel.

The team behind Zootopia 2 explains the meaning behind the movie's after-credits scene. Zooptopia originally released in 2016, introducing audiences to a metropolis of talking animals. In it, rabbit cop Judy Hopps navigates a conspiracy with a con artist fox named Nick Wilde, all the while encountering prejudices along the way.

Now, Judy and Nick are back again in Zootopia 2, which just hit wide release today. This time, the pair is teaming up with a new hero, a snake voiced by Ke Huy Quan. The sequel is co-directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, and produced by Bush alongside Jennifer Lee and Yvette Merino.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan, director Bush and producer Merino break down the film's post-credits scene. Speaking of the feather in the scene, Bush noted that "there are limitless numbers of stories to tell in the world of Zootopia." He kept things vague as to what that could mean in the future of the series.

Nonetheless, Merino confirmed that "Zootopia was always created as an area on a continent in a world." This, according to both of them, makes the opportunities for expansion great. Check out the full quotes from Bush and Merino below:

ScreenRant: I want to use my last question to talk about the tease at the end. There's a feather, and I'm so immersed in this world that it didn't even hit me until I saw that. I was like, "Oh, we haven't seen birds..."

Jared Bush: Well, I think that there are limitless numbers of stories to tell in the world of Zootopia. I think that this is something that hopefully, when audiences see it, will get them excited about what that could be, what that actually means, and what mystery may lie ahead. I think it's something that we'd love to explore.

Yvett Merino: Exactly. Zootopia was always created as an area on a continent in a world. So, if you think of it that way, you never know what's going to happen.

Zootopia 2 already expands the world from the first film, which mostly sticks to the urbanized anthropomorphic world referenced in the title. In the sequel film, Judy and Nick explore new biomes with their friend Gary. Gary being a snake also allows the film to take on a more reptilian dimension.

The short post-credits teaser is interesting, however, as it reminds audiences that there is one element that they have never seen before in Zootopia: birds. A feather would imply that there are birds in this universe, but they have taken the backseat for a more mammalian-focused franchise.

Both Bush and Merino seem open to delving into the Zooptopia IP's bird-verse in future franchise installments. Neither was too specific in revealing the shape that would take.

Of course, this avian expansion depends upon Zootopia getting more movies. So far, Zootopia 2 is off to a good start, with a 92% Tomatometer from the 79 critics who have rated it so far. This rivals the first movie's Certified Fresh 98% score.

The first Zootopia film made over $1 billion. With positive reviews and a holiday week release, Zooptopia 2 has a decent chance at matching this success. But in order for their teased bird world to truly manifest, it has to continue to perform well enough to warrant Zootopia 3.
