By Suzanne BlakeShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberIt's Thanksgiving day, and you're in the midst of whipping up a grand turkey feast for your family and friends. And then it dawns on you: you're out of a crucial ingredient to make a perfect dinner.
Luckily, many grocery stores are still open on Thanksgiving for last-minute runs.
Why It Matters
Thanksgiving is one of the most important days for home chefs across the country. Having access to grocery stores during the holiday might be necessary for missing ingredients and other emergencies that pop up.
With many stores closing for the holiday, it's essential to know what's still open—even for a few hours.
What To Know
...Food Lion
Food Lion remains open on Thanksgiving, with most stores operating from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. However, to be sure, call ahead to confirm your store’s hours.
Kroger
Kroger is also open on Thanksgiving Day, but expect the store to close early.
The exact hours vary by location, so you should call ahead for stores in Kroger’s family: Baker’s, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Foods Co, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Gerbes, Jay C Food Store, King Soopers, Kroger, Mariano’s, Metro Market, Pay-Less Super Markets, Pick’n Save, QFC, Ralphs, Ruler, and Smith’s Food and Drug.
Meijer
Meijer remains open from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. to serve customers’ Thanksgiving needs.
Whole Foods
Whole Foods often operates on reduced hours during the Thanksgiving holiday, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Some stores extended hours on November 25 and 26, remaining open until 10 p.m.
Wegmans
Wegmans stays open for Thanksgiving shoppers until 4 p.m. However, the company said to verify with your local store’s hours, as they may vary by location.
What People Are Saying
Whole Foods wrote on its website: “Many of our stores are open for modified hours on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. We're closed on Christmas Day. Check your local store page for details.”
What Happens Next
Some grocers do close entirely on Thanksgiving, though. This includes Aldi, Target, Trader Joe’s, Walmart and Costco.
The majority of stores will open to normal hours on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Some will expand their hours to adjust for higher shopper demand as well.
