Texas A&M (11-0, 7-0 SEC) did not move up or down in the latest College Football Playoff ranking, staying put at No. 3 after defeating Samford 48-0, and will now take on No. 16 Texas (8-3, 5-2) on Friday night in DKR for the first time since 2010 after falling to the Longhorns 17-7 in Kyle Field this time last season.
The Aggies have been on a roll, reaching 11-0 for the first time since 1992, while starting quarterback Marcel Reed is having a career year, and is guaranteed at least two, to three more games knowing that Texas A&M is a lock for the CFP regardless of Friday's outcome, and will earn a spot in the SEC Championship Game they leave Austin to with a win.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAfter trading starter with current Houston QB Conner Weigman last season, Marcel Reed outright earned the starting spot. He immediately went to work this offseason to improve his mechanics, specifically his footwork and accuracy, to improve as a pocket passer.
Through 11 games, the redshirt sophomore has thrown for 2,752 yards, 25 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, combined with 395 yards rushing and six scores. Even more impressive, Reed has produced 48 explosive plays of 20 yards or more, including 43 through the air.
These numbers, paired with the Aggies' undefeated record, have made Reed a Heisman Trophy candidate, but all that matters right now is playing his best game against a Texas defense that caused him problems last season.
On Tuesday, Marcel Reed was named a finalist for the Davey O'Brien Award, joining Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza and Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin. The 49th Annual Davey O'Brien Awards Dinner will be held Monday, Feb. 16, 2026, at The Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
