Relations between the two have been delicate since the series' start, and now, just a little over ten chapters in, the conflict bubbling beneath the surface all along has finally boiled over.
Despite the budding romance between Dabura and Tomoe, as well as the growing friendship between Cross, Maru, Yuka, and Tsurugi, it seems like war between humans and the Simurians is inevitable. Unfortunately, this conflict has already claimed a fan-favorite character, hinting that Jujutsu Kaisen's sequel could be going down the same path as the original series.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Teases the Death of a New Fan-Favorite
Chapter #12 of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo takes readers back to Makyo Shinjuku, which has become completely infested with cursed spirits over the years. While purging some of the cursed spirits, Yakumaru, one of the previously introduced sorcerers, comes across Osuki, a Simurian with a cursed spirit, which Osuki claims is a Kalyan.
In the altercation that follows between the sorcerers and the Simurians, Yakumaru shoots Cross. It's too soon to say whether the wounds will be fatal, but things aren't looking too good for Cross, especially considering the tear running down his third eye.
As revealed in the Simurians' flashback a few chapters prior, the Simurians only shed tears from their third eye when a Kalyan is killed, when they are born, and when they die. As such, Cross may very well be in mortal danger at the moment. While the Simurians do wield a power just like cursed energy, it has yet to be confirmed whether they can use Reverse Cursed Technique.
The latest chapter also has many fans analyzing the location of the gunshots and estimating whether they're really fatal, much like how fans were doing with Gojo's injuries during the final arc of Jujutsu Kaisen, and that alone does not bode well for Cross.
Of course, it's unclear whether Gege Akutami will truly kill off a character as major as Cross this early into the sequel, but knowing Jujutsu Kaisen and its history of mercilessly killing off its cast, it's not completely out of the question. If anything'ss for sure, this is only the beginning of the suffering angst to come in the sequel.
Jujutsu Kaisen's Killing Spree Continues in Modulo
Yuji from Jujutsu Kaisen and Maru from Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo
Over the years, Jujutsu Kaisen has certainly earned a reputation for being rather ruthless when it comes to killing off characters. Basically, no one was safe in Jujutsu Kaisen, be it a minor character like Junpei, a flashback character like Riko Amanai, or even a major player like Gojo Satoru.
This often meant that the series would kill off its most interesting or popular characters, like Nanami and Nobara. These deaths also began feeling repetitive during the battle against Sukuna in the final arc, where multiple sorcerers jumped into the fight one after another, only to be killed off around two chapters later.
By the end of it all, these constant character deaths left almost no impact on readers. Sadly, despite starting a new series, it seems Gege Akutami hasn't changed a bit, or lost his penchant for tragedy, and Cross might be the first to be caught in the bloodshed.
Admittedly, it is still early for a major death, as even in Jujutsu Kaisen, the earliest, most memorable death, which is Junpei's, only took place over 20 chapters in. That said, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is supposedly going to be a short series, which means the story might not be able to afford to put off the main conflict for much longer.
However, it is still disappointing that Modulo might end up recklessly killing off its cast just like the original series, especially since characters like Cross and Maru have grown on readers in the last few months.
It's hard to see what else this killing spree offers beyond just shock value, and it would frankly be dull if Modulo went down the exact same, tragedy-filled path as Jujutsu Kaisen. But of course, for now, fans can only hope that Cross' plot armor ends up being stronger than it looks.
