Makuochi Echebiri is a News Writer for Collider. He has been interested in creative writing from as far back as high school, and he would consume pretty much anything that’s film or TV. However, his truest love lies in the presence of historical epics and thrillers.
Lured by the brilliance of Middle Earth from an early age both in print and on screen, his palate has since expanded to other realms including Westeros, Kattegat among others. He also possesses a great appetite for the stories that emanate from the vastness of space. Even though he is no Avenger.
Obsessed with storytelling and having works of his own that have yet to make it to print, he is content to use that ability to communicate to as many as are reachable. In his spare time, he looks out for avenues where he can aid people aside from his plans to reign over this earthly realm. Yes…you heard that first here.

Sydney Sweeney has now faced four consecutive box office bombs, most recently with the sports biopic Christy. However, while she has defended her latest release, emphasizing its artistic merit over commercial performance, her streak of underperforming films is something she’ll want to reverse quickly. Luckily, Sweeney has several high-profile projects in the works that could help restore her box office credibility, including the highly anticipated remake of Barbarella, the cult 1968 sci-fi classic. Sweeney is set to step into the titular role made iconic by Jane Fonda while also serving as its executive producer. The film has The Running Man director Edgar Wright attached to direct, and now the filmmaker has offered an encouraging update on the project.
Wright recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with host Josh Horowitz, where he was quizzed about his decision to return to the world of comic book adaptations after stepping away from Ant-Man. “After my experience [with Ant-Man], I wasn’t generally interested in superhero movies,” he admitted, adding, “but that doesn’t mean I’m not interested in a comic book movie. I’d love to do another comic book movie.” On the status of Barbarella, Wright spoke in conditional terms, using “if,” suggesting that no concrete progress has been made yet. He did, however, reveal that the remake aims to adapt the original comic book source material more faithfully, rather than simply redoing the 1968 film:
"I think if that did happen, it would be more [of an adaptation of the source material]. I love the original, and I probably watched that at exactly the right age: too young. The script is by Terry Southern, though you can feel the Terry Southern-ess of it start to... there’s a lot of that in there, and when it’s really sharp, it’s great. It’s beautiful to look at, and it’s fun and subversive. The books themselves are just beautiful and really imaginative and progressive."
Sweeney first signed on to the Barbarella remake in 2022, but updates on the project have been sparse since then. Earlier this year, the actress offered some insight, revealing that work was underway on the story and script. “I was just in London and had a meeting to discuss the story and the script,” she said, adding, “I can't say too much, but it's really going to come together in a very, very fun and big way. It's a long process. I don't think people realize how long some things can take, but it's gonna be worth the wait…” Wright’s recent comments on the film’s possible direction mark the first update on the script since Sweeney’s remarks in May, and from his words, it doesn't seem like much progress has been made, but like Sweeney earlier emphasized, projects of this status can take a long while to come together, but hopefully, it doesn't perish in development hell, like the other remake attempts before it.
Sydney Sweeney Has Other Ambitious Projects In the Works
Sweeney has a packed slate of upcoming projects. She’s set to star in the highly anticipated live-action remake of the iconic anime franchise Gundam, which follows an epic space war and is scheduled to begin production early next year. The cast has reportedly expanded to include The Recruit star Noah Centineo. Sweeney will also begin shooting the romantic drama Scandalous opposite Colman Domingo next year. She closes out 2025 with The Housemaid, a psychological thriller co-starring Amanda Seyfried, slated for release on December 19.
