For the third year in a row, Yorgos Lanthimos appeared in theaters and wowed critics and audiences alike, this time with his darkly comedic remake of Save the Green Planet! titled Bugonia. The film reunites his Kinds of Kindness co-stars Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons as a high-powered CEO and a conspiracy theorist, respectively, whose paths converge when the latter kidnaps the former under suspicion that she's actually an alien sent to destroy Earth. For as much praise and awards buzz as both actors, and the film in general, have received, though, there's also a third, critical piece to the film's success — Plemons's on-screen cousin and partner in crime, Aidan Delbis. To celebrate Bugonia's arrival at home today, Collider can exclusively share a new behind-the-scenes sneak peek shining the spotlight on the newcomer and how he fits into Lanthimos's latest zany project.
From the beginning, the role of Don (Delbis) was one that Lanthimos wanted to cast outside of Hollywood, Lanthimos said in the video. While the choice was partly in keeping with his love of the dynamic between established actors and non-actors, he also wanted an authentic portrayal of a neurodivergent character rather than a practiced performance by a star. Enter Delbis, who saw the open casting call for an autistic actor and jumped at the opportunity to make his debut. Immediately, Stone and Plemons saw the brilliance in his abilities to play Don, both on his audition tape and then in person when he came to the set. Plemons went as far as calling Teddy and Don's dynamic one of his favorites he's gotten to help bring to life and credited Delbis as the "ace in the hole" that makes Bugonia complete. Coupled with the behind-the-scenes footage of the young actor working with the director and co-stars, it shows just how valuable he was to the entire process.
The video is taken from the making-of featurette, "The Birth and the Bees: The Making of Bugonia," which will be included exclusively with the film when purchased at select theaters. In addition to highlighting the importance of Delbis's acting debut, it joins Lanthimos, Stone, Plemons, and the rest of the cast and crew on a journey exploring what it takes to bring one of the director's surreal features to life. Aside from the starring trio and Lanthimos, Bugonia was also created with the help of a supporting cast featuring Stavros Halkias, Marc T. Lewis, Vanessa Eng, and Alicia Silverstone, alongside writer Will Tracy, and producers Stone, Ed Guiney, and Ari Aster.
What's Next for Yorgos Lanthimos After 'Bugonia'?
Bugonia caps off a red-hot streak of bonkers films for Lanthimos and Stone, including Kinds of Kindness and the Best Picture-nominated Poor Things, which earned Stone her second Best Actress win. Their latest collaboration earned a Certified Fresh 87% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8/10 review from Collider's Ross Bonaime, who said, "Lanthimos continues making some of the wildest movies to hit theaters, led by two performances of the year from Plemons and Stone." After releasing three films in three years, however, the director is ready to slow it down a bit. In an interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub earlier this year, he confirmed that he's planning to take a break after what's been an exhausting, if rewarding, run of filmmaking.
"I think I need a break. I've said that before in between the other three, but I'm serious now. You can hold me to it. I'm going to take a little break. I decide which film to make every time a script is ready, so when it is ready, and we've been working on something for such a long time, it just feels like a shame to just leave it there and wait. So, I kind of forced myself, almost, to try and find the time to do it immediately after I finished something. Like we shot Kinds of Kindness during that very long period of VFX on Poor Things, so I felt that I needed to do something during that time. Then, Bugonia, I had read three years before, and we worked with Will a little bit on the script, so it felt ready, and we just wanted to go out and make it. So, you find the will and the strength, but at some point, it runs out. We're at that point."
Bugonia is now available for rent and purchase on digital platforms and will release on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on December 23. Check out our exclusive sneak peek in the player above.
