After Texas A&M University student Brianna Marie Aguilera was found dead following a football game, her mother spoke out to reject the police's assessment of the tragedy. On November 29, the young woman's body was discovered just outside an apartment on campus, sparking a police investigation.

An initial assessment concluded that a homicide was not committed. The investigation is still ongoing, and the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office is currently determining the cause of death.

Stephanie Rodriguez, Aguilera's mother, doesn't agree with the police's findings that the facts don't support homicide as a cause of death. The grieving mother spoke with People to give her honest opinions on the investigation and what she thinks happened that led to Aguilera's death.

Rodriguez theorized that her daughter was shoved over a balcony, or that she fell asleep after drinking alcohol and was thrown over the balcony. She came up with the latter theory because she knows that when Aguilera drinks, she tends to fall asleep because "she's so thin and frail, she cannot handle alcohol."

“I'm thinking either someone shoved her over the balcony, or when my daughter does drink, she has the tendency [to fall asleep], and she's so thin and frail, she cannot handle alcohol. And I think that maybe either it might've been that, and they probably got scared and threw her over the balcony, or they shoved her off.”

Aguilera's mother was "very upset" after the police department released its initial findings because it indicated that the 19-year-old student either died by suicide or that it was accidental. Rodriguez claimed that she "would know" if her daughter had thoughts of suicide. "Why would she be? She was living her best life...you don't say that," she exclaimed.

“And that's when it made me very upset because I was like, my daughter wasn't suicidal. I would know. She's not suicidal. Why would she be? She was living her best life. She loved life. I mean, she loved going to school. She wanted to become a lawyer. I mean, it was just something that I was like, you don't say that.”

According to Rodriguez, Aguilera was in the presence of over a dozen individuals at a party taking place at an apartment building after the football game. Continuing her balcony theory, the student's mother wondered if Aguilera got into a fight with someone regarding her boyfriend.

"They were arguing about that," Rodriguez said, even though the police's investigation doesn't align with this theory at the moment, and Rodriguez was never in touch with her daughter once the football game started.

Ending on a happier note, Rodriguez described Aguilera as smart and happy. The student saw her family over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and went to see Wicked: For Good with her brothers.

Aguilera was apparently "eager" to return to A&M after the break to pursue a legal degree, which is why she's adamant that "there was no way that she would do this to herself."

“She was always smart. She was eager to get back to school. She was happy...She wanted to get back to A&M. There was no way that she would do this to herself.”

The investigation has not ended, with law enforcement continuing the process of interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence. Detectives have yet to find any indication of a homicide but are determined to fully investigate the tragedy surrounding Aguilera's death. The Austin Police Department also sent its condolences to Aguilera's family and friends.

After Aguilera's death, her family launched a GoFundMe page to raise money to help with the financial burden that Rodriguez is now experiencing. They set a goal of $12,000, which has already been surpassed. As of this writing, the family has received $38,955 in donations.
