Another Republican lawmaker is joining Democrats in introducing a resolution to prevent the Trump administration from attacking Venezuela without congressional approval.
Concretely, Thomas Massie is joining Jim McGovern and Joaquin Castro in introducing a War Powers Resolution in the House.
Rep. McGovern said the resolution comes after Trump said days ago that the airspace "above and surrounding Venezuela" should be considered "closed in its entirety."
"Administration officials hve not publicly detailed any formal policy or legal basis for such a step, which many legal experts say could be interpreted as a hostile act under international law," the lawmaker added in a release.
"Whatever this is about, it has nothing to do with stopping drugs. Trump just pardoned the former President of Honduras who was convicted of sending cocaine to the U.S. And last year he pardoned a guy who brought fentanyl in from China via the dark web. To me, this appears to be all about creating a pretext for regime change. And I believe Congress has a duty to step in and assert our constitutional authority. No more illegal boat strikes, and no unauthorized war in Venezuela," he added.
Massie is mirroring an action set to be taken by Rand Paul in the Senate. "War powers belong to Congress, not the White House. The latest boat-strike revelations make that clearer than ever. I'm demanding answers and insisting Congress reclaim its constitutional authority," Paul said in a social media publication.
The first attempt to do so failed weeks ago, but Democratic Sen. Time Kaine expressed confidence in the new attempt, saying that the vote was "before all of these assets have amassed around Venezuela, and before President Trump said that the airspace needs to be closed."
"The circumstances have changed in the months since we had that vote. In each of these instances, we were able to get two Republicans to vote together with Democrats," Kaine added.
He went on to make reference to a report claiming that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth directed all members aboard an alleged drug boat be killed, an order that prompted forces to conduct a second strike to finish off survivors. "We do believe that we will get more support for these motions when they are refiled," Kaine said.
