Skate launched in September with more than 15million players tying out the free-to-play title in its first month. The ‘90s-inspired season one went live in October and gave the game’s soundtrack a major makoever. In total, 21 new anthems were added and 25 classics were removed.
AdvertisementFor the ‘80s-inspired season two update ‘Free Radical’, 22 new tracks have been added to the soundtrack that can be unlocked via the ingame Grabster tool. These include IDLES’ ‘Hall & Oates’, Motörhead’s ‘Overkill’ and New Order’s ‘Age Of Consent’. “With Season 2: Future Radical, we’re heading back to the ‘80s – a time of neon lights, arcade machines, and punk vs. pop. And what better way to experience the vibe of this decade than with your friends,” reads a developer blog post.
“With a new co-op mode and party voice chat, it’s never been easier to play together. Plus, there are new skateable areas, our first improvements to the Replay Editor, new and improved tricks, our second World/Visual pass, our first character visual pass, and more.”
However, according to the game’s Spotify playlist, 25 other tracks have been removed including Amyl And The Sniffers’ ‘Facts’ and 2hollis’ ‘Destroy Me’. If the update is anything like season one, it might take a few days for the soundtrack changes to take effect. Check out the full list below.

According to developers, the plan is for Skate to be an ever-evolving world and every season a “significantly heavy batch” of songs will be replaced by new choices. “If there’s an outcry because one particular song left, there’s definitely the opportunity of making it permanent or bringing it back,” Skate Creative Director Deran Chung told NME. The team are also “always listening” to suggestions from fans.
Advertisement“The word that kept cropping up [with the soundtrack] was ‘juxtaposition’,” he added. “If you’ve got all these alternative indie rock tracks, you need something else that sounds completely fresh, otherwise the whole thing would just feel samey. That’s the anti-vision of what we want to do.”
However there are songs that will never appear in Skate. “In skateboarding, if someone uses a song in one of their videos, you’re not supposed to use it again, so there’s a little bit of that,” with the music of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and Grand Theft Auto forbidden. “If players have already heard that song a million times, I don’t necessarily want them to listen to it again in our game. There’s enough music in the world. And I like the challenge of finding other stuff that’s just as good.”
In other news, Nine Inch Nails’ longtime guitarist Robin Finck has released a new horror video game Sleep Awake alongside a terrifying soundtrack.
