Using the best party combinations in Octopath Traveler 0 can be what determines if you beat enemies or are defeated in battle. The new installment in Square Enix’s RPG franchise has a different take from previous entries. In addition to the life-sim gameplay module, in which you’ll rebuild your hometown, you’ll also craft a custom protagonist in Octopath Traveler 0, and have the Ringbearer unlock various jobs as you progress through the campaign.

Unlike the previous titles, each of which had eight different characters, and you had to build four-character teams, this game offers over 30 characters to compose your eight-character party. As such, you’ll be required to choose more carefully, as there are plenty of options. This is one of the main new features in Octopath Traveler 0, which draws directly from the mobile spin-off, Champions of the Continent.

Traditional RPG Party - Early Game

For the first dozen hours of gameplay, you’ll be rather limited in terms of characters for your party. As each party can contain eight characters, you’ll spend a lot of time progressing through the campaign and unlocking the characters to fill all of the slots. After that, however, you’ll start to unlock a few characters that can take over the spots occupied by previous units.

A traditional party combination in Octopath Traveler often consists of a good balance between damage output potential, as well as a tank, healers, and supports who either buff the party or debuff enemies.

The early-game traditional team comp will have a variety of characters occupying different roles. For example, your party will be well supported by Stia, an important plot character who uses the new Architect job. She is capable of providing support to the party, such as granting them BP for more powerful attacks, as well as healing allies.

Stia is one of the absolute best characters in the game and will appear across several party combinations, and this is evident from the very start of the game – which can be experienced in the Octopath Traveler 0 demo. You can also use Alexia, the first Scholar you unlock, for Lightning and Dark damage, while Celsus can help with Critical strikes.

This team won’t decimate enemies too quickly, but will remain standing with support from Stia and Macy, while stun-locking enemies with a variety of damage options. Once their defenses are broken, you’ll likely be delivering powerful blows with your Warrior Ringbearer, should you choose this as your first job in Octopath Traveler 0.

You’ll Unlock More Enticing Characters For Your Party Further Down The Line

As you progress through the campaign, you’ll unlock more characters and see that you may need to swap out characters. The idea behind this party is the same, though you’ll have a wider range of elemental abilities with a Scholar character like Cyrus, whose Fire, Ice, and Lightning abilities complement Alexia’s Dark attacks. Ophilia will bring in some Light damage, as well as dedicated healing as a Cleric.

At this point, you may also unlock Saiorse, the first Dancer in the game, for Fan damage. Tressa is also a good substitute for Macy, as she can provide Donations and buffs, while you can specialize your main character as a Thief to replace Celsus and deal Critical damage. Stia should remain. Lastly, Reime could replace Viator as a powerful Warrior who resembles Hikari in Octopath Traveler 2, though with different abilities.

Physical Stun-Lock DPS Team

You Can Avoid Using Elemental Damage In Octopath Traveler 0

If you want to avoid Elemental damage altogether, perhaps because SP management can be tricky on top of the required BP management, you can build a physical party composition focused on stun-locking opponents. For this, I’d recommend two Thieves, like the Ringbearer and Therion, who can help attack weaknesses and then exploit them. Meanwhile, Olberic can serve as a tank for the party.

Having a bit more variety, like Tressa, Stia, and Primrose, can help you stun-lock opponents more quickly, though it’s important to keep the party alive. That’s where Ophilia, aided by Stia, comes in. Ophilia can also help with physical damage every so often. The only thing missing here would be Book damage, though it’s compensated for with other characters.

Special Endgame Party

There Are Some Rare Characters In Octopath Traveler 0

Near the end of Octopath Traveler 0, you’ll also have unlocked a series of special characters. This isn’t a necessarily optimized team for combat, but if you want to boast your achievements and showcase characters like Eltrix, Rondo, Bargello, Alaune, Isla, Solon, and Richard. I recommend having Stia here to provide some support and healing.

The best alternative with these characters in Octopath Traveler 0, however, is using them in traditional party combinations, occupying roles of characters of their equivalent classes. Isla or Solon, for example, could replace Cyrus, while Eltrix or Rondo can take over Olberic or Reime’s place.

There are countless party combinations in the new game, especially with the huge roster and the increased number of team members. While some are more optimized for certain instances, I do recommend playing with the characters you most enjoy, be it for their abilities or their designs, as this is what proves to be more enjoyable in Octopath Traveler 0.
