Julia Garner, well known for her roles as Ruth Langmore in Netflix's crime drama series Ozark and, most recently, Justine Gandy in the acclaimed 2025 horror flick Weapons, has taken on a number of impressive projects over the years, both for small and large screens. In 2019, amid Ozark's four-season run, the actress appeared in a pretty disturbing indie film directed by Kitty Green, which critics found absolutely remarkable. Titled The Assistant, the workplace drama film debuted at the Telluride Film Festival on August 30, 2019, before hitting US theaters on January 31, 2020. Five years later, the movie just got much easier to watch as it arrives on its new streaming home.

The Assistant is one of the late additions to the Netflix lineup for last month, as the movie arrived yesterday, November 30, 2025. In addition to directing, Green wrote and co-edited with Blair McClendon. The filmmaker also produced alongside James Schamus, Scott Macaulay, P. Jennifer Dana, and Ross Jacobson. Starring beside Garner in the psychological drama are Matthew Macfadyen, Makenzie Leigh, Kristine Froseth, Jon Orsini, and Noah Robbins, all appearing in supporting roles.

Julia Garner Gave a Masterful Performance in 'The Assistant'

While critics may have approved of The Assistant, as reflected in its 93% Certified Freshrating on Rotten Tomatoes, viewers were not so impressed. The review aggregator website shows that the film has a disappointing 25% Popcornmeter score with several remarks noting that it didn't live up to expectations.

For those yet to check out this underrated gem, it follows Garner's character Jane, a recent college graduate and aspiring film producer, who has just landed her dream job as a junior assistant to a powerful entertainment mogul. Her day is much like any other assistant: making coffee, ordering lunch, arranging travel accommodations, and taking phone messages. But as Jane follows her daily routine, she grows increasingly aware of the abuse that insidiously colors every aspect of her workday, an accumulation of degradations against which she decides to take a stand.

The Assistant is available now on Netflix. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
