Sinners prospered for Warner Bros. and Ryan Coogler after hitting theaters in spring 2025, and has continued to do so on streaming since it premiered on HBO Max July 4.

But the biggest surprise hit non-IP movie of the year will be streaming somewhere else for the tail end of the holiday season, as Prime Video announces the arrival of Sinners to its lineup on December 26.

Black Panther director Coogler’s first post-MCU movie stars frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan in the dual role of Smoke and Stack, a pair of Depression-era hoodlums who have returned to their Mississippi Delta home to set up a new criminal enterprise.

The grand opening of the brothers’ rowdy new juke joint is violently disrupted by a family of Irish vampires, leading to scenes of outrageous mayhem, orchestrated with stylish command by Coogler, and scored with a soundtrack of songs inspired by traditional blues and Irish music.

Critics heaped unending praise on Sinners upon its release, and it currently sits at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating a high level of acclaim. The movie’s audience score is only one point behind at 96%.

ScreenRant’s Sinners review calls the movie “exquisite vampire horror” and hails it as “one of the best films of the year.”

“It’s a masterful work of art that is complex in themes and rich in character,” the review continues, adding that “While Coogler has always been a great filmmaker, Sinners may have just elevated him to auteur status.”

Legendary director Spike Lee rushed to praise Sinners as well, saying in an Instagram post, “I just had the greatest experience of watching a film in years.”

Sinners opened to $48 million at the domestic box office on its way to grossing $279 million in North America. Its worldwide box office take has reached $367 million.

Despite the film’s status as a hit, prospects for a Sinners sequel do not seem strong after Coogler’s remarks about the topic back in June (via THR). “You never want to close the door on anything, but it was actually a break from franchise filmmaking for me,” the Black Panther director said.

“So I wanted to make something that was complete and let audiences take it,” he continued.

Sinners will switch homes to Prime Video just as the awards season is beginning to crank up. The film garnered Oscar buzz back in April, but it’s too early to gauge whether it will remain in contention as the process plays out.

Others might argue that the film's unconventional premise and graphic violence make it more of an acquired taste. There may also be a middle ground, with audiences appreciating Sinners' originality and craft while acknowledging its flaws or limitations.
