Show me the facts
Explain it like I’m 5
Give me a lighthearted recap
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. used "AI slop" to mislead his social media users into thinking he was eating a Thanksgiving meal with Donald Trump and other Republicans, but his critics were not fooled. The rapid advancements in artificial intelligence have dominated headlines in recent years, with the technology receiving strong praise and sharp criticism.
Hollywood has even gotten in on the action, with an AI actor named Tilly Norwood sparking massive controversy.
On Thanksgiving, Kennedy, the Health and Human Services secretary, wished his X followers a "happy Thanksgiving."
He included a photo of himself, Donald Trump, Donald Trump Jr., Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and Tesla CEO Elon Musk sitting around a Thanksgiving meal on Air Force One. Over the past several days, the photo has been roasted for being altered using AI.
The original 2024 image showed the five men sitting around a table full of McDonald's meals. Instead of Kennedy and Donald Trump Jr. holding up burgers and fries, the AI photo replaced the fast food with Thanksgiving food and desserts. Zooming in on the photo, it's clear that their hands and arms don't look natural anymore.
@Blabses called out X's AI chatbot Grok for misleading users by reporting Kennedy's Thanksgiving "AI slop" as news.
Grok even added a headline that claimed Vice President J.D. Vance and movie actor Sylvester Stallone appeared in the photo when they weren't. The chatbot replied to acknowledge the error.
@ThatGirlCasey1 criticized Kennedy for posting "fake pictures," while @oyyyyveyyyy said, "It's all theatre."
Meanwhile, @MMMiehls added that it's hard to trust what's real anymore when the top officials in the country are sharing fake and misleading imagery, adding, "Try a real picture next time." @oksanka_luky called the AI photo "bizarre" and questioned why Kennedy chose to "live a lie."
Trump and other officials currently working in the White House have used AI-generated videos and photos, including as a way to slam their critics.
After the No Kings rally on October 18, Trump shared an AI video of himself wearing a crown and dropping feces onto protesters. He also recently altered a video of Hakeem Jeffries to give the House minority leader a mustache and sombrero, which has been called racist.
The original McDonald's photo was criticized for being at odds with Kennedy's Make America Healthy Again mantra. AI may be getting harder to spot as the technology improves, but Kennedy's "AI slop" didn't really fool anyone because the original image was already widely panned at the time.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s photo showed clear signs that it was altered by AI, but as fake news and misleading imagery continue to find a welcome home on social media, the situation will only grow worse as users find it more difficult to differentiate reality from fiction.
