Arsenal loanee scores late winner

Fabio Vieira scored a late winner for Hamburger SV against VFB Stuttgart on Sunday, despite his team being down to 10 following Alexander Rossing-Lelesiit’s red card.

Arsenal loanee Fabio Vieira has had a disrupted start to life with Hamburger SV, as a result of two red cards and their respective suspensions, but he’s generally been a starter for the team when available.

Before last weekend, Vieira had started six games and come off the bench in just one of the seven matches he’d been eligible to play. But he dropped to the bench on Sunday against VFB Stuttgart.

67 minutes into the match, with the scores level at 1-1, Vieira was introduced in place of former Gunner Albert Sambi Lokonga to try and find a winning goal.

But the task got more difficult in the 81st minute, as Alexander Rossing-Lelesiit was dismissed for his second yellow card of the match.

At 1-1 with 10 minutes remaining, HSV would have been forgiven for playing things out for a draw. Yet in the 94th minute, Fabio Balde raced away from the Stuttgart defence and squared for Vieira, who calmly caressed the ball into the bottom corner for 2-1.

The goal was Vieira’s first in an HSV shirt, though he did provide a couple of assists in his previous seven appearances.

If the Arsenal loanee was looking to win back his place in the starting lineup, there’s not much more he could have done to earn it.
