When a New Hampshire man heard a noise he described as being akin to "the house collapsing," he initially feared the worst—then he checked his Ring security camera, and that changed.
Mike, from Newport, shared a clip of the footage he saw that day with Ring; the company has since passed the video on to Newsweek. It stars Mike’s two dogs, Gema and Arty, and goes some way to explaining what the noise he heard that day was.
There is something Mike is keen for everyone to know. "My dogs are 3-year-old Great Danes and they are scared of everything," he told Ring. Anyone watching the security camera footage Mike shared will quickly notice something else about Gema and Arty: they are very close.
That’s not a bad thing. Having a close canine companion can play a crucial role in helping a dog live a long and happy life, according to a 2023 study published in the journal Evolution, Medicine, and Public Health. The study involved 21,000 dog owners, with researchers examining the various factors that played a part in a canine enjoying a happy and healthy life.
While household stability, financial security and the age of their owner all played a role, the research highlighted social factors as being the most-significant influence on overall well-being. In fact, it was found to be five times more influential than any other identified in the study.
Gema and Arty being close to one another is a blessing that respect. However, in this instance, it proved to be something of a curse. As the video provided shows, that particular day, Arty was relaxing on the couch. However, Gema wanted to join him. With limited space, she attempted the impossible, with predictable results.
"Gema was trying to fit in a spot on the sofa closer to her brother, Arty," Mike said. "She clearly did not fit and fell off the side. When that happened, the action of her falling scared them both, and off they went."
The video captures the moment both dogs were sent crashing to the ground. While the two canines escaped the fall unscathed, the sound clearly spooked them both, causing them to quickly dash off.
In fairness to Gema and Arty, they were not alone in having that kind of reaction to the noise. Mike was not outside with the dogs at the time, but can recall what happened. "The sound that was made from inside the house was similar to the house collapsing," he said.
The only positive was the fact he had a Ring camera setup overlooking where the dogs had been, so it didn’t take him long to investigate what had happened and find out the truth. "When we pulled up the video to see what had happened, my wife and I laughed at the video," Mike said.
It is wonderful that Arty and Gema have each other, but Mike may want to consider investing in a bigger couch.
