By Liz O'ConnellShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberA pet owner was driving down the road when a white blur on the shoulder made him slow, and a closer look confirmed the unthinkable—his cat had snuck off minutes away from home.
The owner, known on TikTok as @jbzoo2222, started his November 20 video by pointing the camera toward the direction of his home, which he said was about a six-minute drive from where he stopped. He pulled into a random driveway after spotting a white furball. He quickly hopped out of the car to discover his cat, Grayson, sitting in the grass, unamused that he had been found.
Grayson lives on a farm with 17 other cats at the house, the owner told Newsweek via TikTok. He usually stays around the house, which is why spotting him six minutes away caught the owner off guard. He had no idea about Grayson's secret daytime adventures, earning himself the nickname "naughty Grayson."
"I just drove past and saw him," he said.
...But Grayson is not the only cat who enjoys adventuring past the boundaries of their homes. As territorial animals, felines will roam about 650 feet away from their homes, according to an article from PetsRadar. Those living in rural areas tend to roam farther than city dwellers, which could be due to restrictions on their yard, the proximity of neighbors or a higher cat population.
Cats will roam away from home because they're hunting, looking for a mate, seeking security, defending their territory or simply curiosity got the best of them.
A study published by the Zoological Society of London tracked 925 pet cats from six countries and discovered the average roaming range did not exceed one square kilometer (about 0.4 square mile). The cats that traveled the farthest reached over 8 square kilometers (around 3 square miles).
The owner shared in a follow-up video that he picked Grayson up and put him back in the van to go home. Grayson was not happy about his field trip being cut short. He meowed incessantly, begging to get out of the van.
Viewer Reactions
The TikTok video reached over 171,800 views, 19,500 likes and 239 comments as of Monday, as people flooded the clip with hysterics over Grayson's reaction to being caught.
"Your eyesight must be amazing to have seen him while driving. I’d have probably thought it was a random bag or a sheep," wrote a viewer.
Another asked: "Why did I think it was a sheep at first?"
A third person pointed out: "He is fuming you have found his secret second home."
