Could Pittsburgh Steelers’ head coach Mike Tomlin actually be a realistic candidate for the New York Giants head coaching vacancy?

The Steelers are stumbling toward their first losing season since 2003 and the first of Tomlin’s 19-year career as their head coach. The Steelers haven’t always been a juggernaut under Tomlin, but they’ve never lost like they did Sunday evening against the Buffalo Bills.

Chants of “Fire Tomlin” echoed through Acrisure Stadium (formerly Heinz Field) as the Steelers gave up 249 rushing yards to the Bills en route to a 26-7 loss at home.

It’s tempting to chalk the chants up to frustrated fans who are tasting real adversity for the first time in a generation. But this loss was felt like so much more than the final score. It was the most rushing yards the Steelers have given up in 50 years, and their own offense was simply sad.

They amassed just 166 total yards (108 passing, 58 rushing), while Aaron Rodgers ended the game looking more like a guy who got jumped in a back alley, not a former MVP. The Steelers as a whole simply looked old, slow, and tired, not the well-coached machine we’re used to seeing from Tomlin and Pittsburgh.

The Steelers don’t have a losing season just yet. They’re 6-6 with five games left to play and there’s time for Tomlin to turn things around. But by the end of the game against the Bills, it looked more like things have run their course in Pittsburgh.

So could Tomlin actually be a realistic candidate to be the Giants’ next head coach? All things must eventually come to an end, and Tomlin is only 53 years old. There’s talk among pundits and fans that the game has passed (the not-old) Tomlin by, and that he appears burnt out. However, he’s probably the most qualified candidate Giants fans could hope for.

Anything can happen, and Tomlin getting fired is increasingly looking like a thing that could realistically happen if the Steelers continue to wilt.

What do you think, Giants’ fans?
