Nov. 30—New Mexico will not play for a Mountain West title.
After four teams — UNM, Boise State, San Diego State and UNLV — tied for first place in the league standings, the Mountain West selected the Broncos and Rebels to meet for the third straight year in the Mountain West championship game. Boise State will host the game on Friday.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe two teams were selected via "a composite average of selected predictive and results-based computer metrics," per the league's tiebreaking procedures. Those averages have not been made publicly available at the time of publication.
UNM (9-3, 6-2) beat SDSU 23-17 on Friday in double overtime to grab a share of first place in head coach Jason Eck's first season with the program.
"We're gonna hold our heads high no matter what happens with this computer tiebreaker," he said during a news conference Friday. "In the olden days, before you had these conference championship games, you'd be in at least three-way tie, maybe four-way depending on what happens.
"I think we controlled what we can control, and it's a great year regardless of what happens with this tiebreaker."
