Zootopia 2 is a global smash hit after just five days in theaters. The new movie is a sequel to Disney's billion-dollar 2016 hit. The Zootopia 2 cast includes returning stars Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman reprising their roles as animal buddy cops Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde opposite an ensemble that features Ke Huy Quan, Andy Samberg, Shakira, Patrick Warburton, Idris Elba, Jenny Slate, and Alan Tudyk.
Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Zootopia 2 is projected to earn a worldwide box office total of $556 million by the end of Sunday, marking the fifth-best global debut of all time. In fact, it has already surpassed the worldwide gross of The Fantastic Four: First Steps ($521.8 million) to become the tenth highest-grossing movie of 2025.
This global total comprises a 5-day domestic gross of $156 million over the Thanksgiving holiday and an additional $400 million from international markets. Of that $400 million, more than half comes from China. Ticket sales in the territory came out to $272 million.
That total, which comes out to roughly 1.924 billion Chinese yuan, makes Zootopia the seventh highest-grossing Hollywood movie of all time in China in a matter of days.
The only U.S. movies ahead of it on the Chinese chart are Transformers: Age of Extinction (1.977 yuan), Aquaman (2.013 yuan), Avengers: Infinity War (2.390 yuan), Furious 7 (2.446 yuan), The Fate of the Furious (2.671 yuan), and Avengers: Endgame (4.250 yuan), the latter of which is the second highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide.
In the 2020s, China has become a tough market for Hollywood films, with many blockbuster titles not even being released in the territory. However, Zootopia 2 seems to be capturing the same audience that made the homegrown animated hit Ne Zha 2 a record-breaking sensation in China earlier this year.
Ne Zha 2 became the first movie to ever gross more than $1 billion in a single region (namely China) and the highest-grossing animated movie of all time, surpassing the record previously set by 2024's Inside Out 2 by grossing a whopping $1.902 billion worldwide.
While Zootopia 2 does not seem to be on a trajectory to break that movie's record, its performance in China sees it zooming up the chart of the highest-grossing animated movies of all time. It has already cracked the Top 50, hitting No. 49 by outgrossing major titles such as Puss in Boots ($555 million) and Kung Fu Panda 4 ($547.7 million).
This enormous worldwide gross makes it very likely that the sequel teased by the ending of Zootopia 2 will be greenlit sooner rather than later. After all, the movie's reported budget of $150 million most likely places its break-even point somewhere around $375 million, which means that it may already be in the black before its first week in theaters is even over.
