Fast & Furious Avoids MCU's Biggest Mistake Before Final Film

Fast & Furious is about to end its historic run of sequel movies, avoiding a major problem faced by the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the 2020s.

The Fast & Furious movie saga will finally be coming to an end in 2027 after 12 feature films. The movie currently in the works, which is provisionally titled Fast 11 or Fast X: Part 2, will be the last one in the franchise's main story. This news means that Fast & Furious has officially avoided the biggest problem experienced by the Marvel Cinematic Universe in recent years.

Although the best Fast & Furious movies are long behind Vin Diesel and co, its big-screen finale will still be a historic moment, 26 years after the first. Following Diesel’s recent update about Fast 11, it appears the film is on track to be released the year after next, when it can hopefully do the franchise justice with a crowdpleasing climax.

Given that Fast & Furious will then have completed its main story arc, we can definitively say that it’s avoided a major mistake made by MCU earlier this decade. In the wake of Avengers: Endgame’s record-breaking box office success, Marvel put out too many TV shows to count, which only ended up tarnishing the reputation of their big-screen counterparts.

Three Fast & Furious Shows Were Considered At Some Point

In contrast to MCU, no live-action Fast & Furious TV spinoff has materialized, despite Universal Pictures considering three different ideas for small-screen iterations of the franchise at various points. According to the book Welcome To The Family: The Explosive Story Behind Fast & Furious, The Blockbusters That Supercharged The World by Barry Hertz, a show about Han Lue actually entered pre-production.

There was also the possibility of a prequel series about a younger version of Vin Diesel’s character Dominic Toretto at one stage, while a buddy comedy series about Roman Pearce and Tej Parker was discussed, too. Fast & Furious movie fans should be grateful none of these show ideas came to fruition, given the negative example of the MCU franchise.

Fast & Furious Having Multiple Shows Would Repeat An MCU Problem

In the rush to capitalize on the mind-boggling commercial success of their 2019 feature film Avengers: Endgame, MCU rushed to release no fewer than eight different TV shows in 2021 and 2022 alone. All in all, the franchise has debuted 18 series on the small screen in the 2020s so far, and they’re not done yet.

Such an overkill of content has diluted the Marvel brand to the extent that even diehard fans are starting to question the merits of most new releases. What’s more, plot links between these new shows and the Marvel movies gives fans a lot of work to do to follow what’s going on across the franchise.

There Is Already A Fast & Furious TV Show

While Fast & Furious has managed to avoid the Marvel mistake of overdoing the content with excessive TV spinoffs, it’s worth noting that the franchise does already have a TV show, which is actually one of its best releases. Fast & Furious Spy Racers may well have inspired the next generation of petrolheads to get into the franchise.

With six seasons of episodes released across two years, the animated series about Dominic Toretto’s young cousin Tony is well worth a watch on Netflix. Still, Fast & Furious shouldn’t spoil it by releasing a litany of other less well-crafted TV spinoffs once its main story has been wrapped up on the big screen.
