The Sci-Fi genre has given us so many rich worlds to explore over the years, with streaming services like Netflix offering the perfect place for old fans to rewatch their favorites and new fans to discover exciting Sci-Fi movie franchises. Sadly, some of the best entries in the genre are set to leave Netflix as soon as December starts.
Over the past few years, the genre has also grown to include an elevated number of Sci-Fi TV shows. Projects like Foundation, The Mandalorian, Stranger Things, Westworld, and more have breathed new life into the genre. However, many of the best Sci-Fi movies and shows have been influenced by a certain franchise, and it is leaving Netflix.
This Fan-Favorite Sci-Fi Movie Trilogy Leaves Netflix Soon
The Sci-Fi movie trilogy that I'm talking about is the Back to the Future franchise. Led by Michael J. Fox's charming performance as Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd's hilarious Doc Brown, the Back to the Future trilogy is one of the most popular and influential franchises in Hollywood history. In 2025, we are celebrating the first movie's 40th anniversary.
To go with the celebrations, Netflix released all three Back to the Future movies on the streaming service on November 1st. For a full month, fans got to rewatch their favorite Sci-Fi trilogy, with a new generation of fans introduced to Marty, Doc, and their time travel shenanigans. However, all three Back to the Future movies will leave Netflix on December 1st.
Why You Should Watch The Back To The Future Trilogy Before It Leaves Netflix
The video glasses in Back to the Future
Given that, prior to them being available on Netflix, the Back to the Future movies had been MIA when it came to streaming for quite some time, the fact that the Sci-Fi trilogy was only available on Netflix for a single month is disappointing. With no idea of when the franchise will be on streaming again, fans had better rush to Netflix while there is still time.
The Back to the Future trilogy is one of the most impactful of all time, making time travel easy to understand for audiences and exciting to follow. As such, it comes as no surprise that Back to the Future 4 rumors emerge now and again. That said, a fourth film in the franchise is simply unnecessary, as the Back to the Future movies are independent.
What I mean by that is that the first movie features time travel to a not-so-distant past. The second movie explores a darker, twisted future and technological advancements that we wish existed in the real 2015. The third movie meshes genres for a bona fide Western with Sci-Fi elements, becoming a unique entry in the franchise.
The Back to the Future franchise offers magnetic characters, a story full of twists and turns, exciting VFX, and a time travel tale that has inspired many of the Sci-Fi movies and shows that followed it. Anyone looking for a fun adventure that offers variety and surprises will want to watch the Back to the Future trilogy before it leaves Netflix.
