TSG 1899 Hoffenheim sporting director Andreas Schicker surprised many Bundesliga journalists with his decision to stay with his current club last week. Despite the fact that current administrative politics at the Sinsheim-based club remain an absolute mess, Schicker outright declined recent interest from other suitors such as VfL Wolfsburg and RB Salzburg.

Schicker spoke about his decision for the first time in an interview with Kicker. As some had suspected, the fact that recent front office dismissals meant that Schicker was in line for a promotion. The 39-year-old confirmed to Kicker that he was now shouldering a greater share of the managerial responsibilities.

“It was a big deal that [marketing director] Tim Jost and I are now running the club,” Schicker said. “Of course, there are additional tasks. But we’re now well staffed in all areas. If it works out, things will become easier. I’m glad that things are continuing in this set-up.“

Schicker spoke on the pull of other clubs, noting that he really didn’t see Wolfsburg or Salzburg offering better options. Like TSG head coach Christian Ilzer, Schicker declared himself particularly impressed with how the team weathered the administrative storm.

“I’m flattered by the interest from other clubs, but I’m happy to continue building what we’ve been building here,” Schicker said. “One has to give the team credit for navigating this difficult phase. At no point was the issue brought into the locker room. I tried to keep it out too.“

Regarding the ongoing issues club supporters are having with controversial agent and Dietmar Hopp confidant Roger Wittmann, Schicker nevertheless didn’t really seem in the mood to consider the voices of the fans. Schicker insisted that the club would stand by Wittmann as he represents many key players.

“One must emphasize that Roger Wittmann and the Rogon company represent a number of very good players who play for us,” Schicker noted. “We must look after them by remaining in contact with their agent. It’s important that the players receive the best possible support, because they simply deserve it.”
