Crystal Palace 1-2 Manchester United: Quickfire goals from Zirkzee and Mount help Red Devils to comeback win in South London

Manchester United picked up their first Premier League triumph in over a month by beating Crystal Palace 2-1 on Sunday.

Both teams headed into the clash aiming to make up for respective defeats last time out.

Having flown out of the blocks, United were nearly rewarded with a goal in the first minute when Casemiro drew a fine save out of Dean Henderson.

Matthijs De Ligt sent a header wide six minutes later as the visitors remained in the ascendancy.

After weathering an early storm, Palace started to lay a foothold on proceedings and had their first big chance quarter of an hour into the contest, but Jean-Philippe Mateta was unable to keep his effort on target.

Latching on to a rebound from Daichi Kamada’s saved effort, Yeremy Pino was inches away from making it two league goals in as many matches, only to be denied by a goal-line clearance.

The hosts’ dominance continued to intensify heading into the final 15 minutes of the half, and Palace could sense a goal was coming.

Off the back of two unsuccessful bites at the cherry, Mateta had a glorious chance to break the deadlock from 12 years after Leny Yoro had brought him down.

The Frenchman sent Senne Lammens the wrong way but had to retake his spot-kick, having been found guilty of a double touch.

Mateta held his nerve once again and got the better of Lammens to give his lead nine minutes shy of half-time.

Going behind was a wake-up call for United, so it was hardly surprising the Red Devils ended the half on the front foot, albeit without necessarily threatening Henderson.

United had Luke Shaw to thank for not going into the interval further behind, as the defender made two crucial blocks to deny Pino and then Eddie Nketiah.

As he did in the first half, Casemiro called Henderson into action in the early exchanges of the second period, and the Palace keeper was up to the task once again.

Henderson was, however, powerless to stop Joshua Zirkzee from levelling the scores in the 54th minute, although the ex-United man will be disappointed to have been beaten from such a tight angle.

United’s equaliser came from a dead-ball, and they had more set-piece joy moments after the hour mark when Bruno Fernandes teed up Mason Mount to send a low drive past Henderson and complete a quick turnaround.

Going ahead did not deter United from keeping their foot on the gas as the Red Devils went in search of a clincher.

Amad Diallo and Diogo Dalot sent their respective efforts well clear of the mark, while Bryan Mbeumo fired straight at Henderson from inside the area.

Still chasing parity, Palace sent on more attacking reinforcements for the final knockings of the game, with United now keen on preserving their lead.

Oliver Glasner’s men were unable to fashion out any clear-cut opportunity and came away empty-handed after going one goal up for the second game running.

For Ruben Amorim’s side, their latest triumph has seen them move up to sixth in the Premier League table, just one point off the top four.
