Thanks to the Thor movies of the MCU, people around the world know exactly what it means to raise Mjolnir in one's hand. And as Thor's Avenger teammates have all tried to prove themselves worthy of his hammer (and one even achieving the feat), the question of when the God of Thunder himself first became worthy remains unanswered. Unfortunately, it is an incredibly epic moment... that will never be seen on film.
Thor Wasn't Actually Worthy of Mjolnir For Most of His Lifetime
As Shown in Thor #14 (2018) by Jason Aaron, Scott Hepburn
Thankfully, readers don't need to know much about the larger lore of Marvel Comic events to learn that Thor was not born 'worthy' of Mjolnir's powers. In fact, the insight into Thor's younger days offered in Thor #14 shows his inability to lift the hammer was an ongoing, infuriating annoyance. As a battle-hungry, blood-spilling, beer-drinking version of himself at this age, the so-called Young Thor focused on the human vikings who worshipped him... and not the enchanted hammer that refused his touch.
When the older, 'King Thor' version of himself arrived to recruit him for battle (something actually quite common for Thor), Young Thor was only enraged further to see the detestable hammer in his older, future hand. Playing off his frustrations and focusing on the battle unfolding in The War of the Realms event, Young Thor did just fine with his Asgardian axe. Until his mother faltered.
Thor Saves His Mothers Life in Marvel Comic Art
Fans don't need all the details behind the villainous assault of the Dark Elf Malekith, only to witness the villain taking Queen Freyja by the throat, and the immediate attack it drew from her loving son. Moving without thin king, Young Thor's narration cuts to the very heart of his character, and his loyalty to his adopted mother:
"I hear the cries of my mother. And my father too, I suppose. And my mind... goes red. And suddenly I no longer give a damn whether I die and take every other Thor along with me. My only thoughts are for the one parent who's always shown me love and compassion over the years. Even when I didn't deserve it. Especially when I didn't deserve it.
"I think of her and I am moving instinctually. Punching her monstrous attacker over and over. With all the power in my fists. Yet something... feels different somehow. In some way... I can't quite put my finger on."
Thor Became Worthy by Calling Mjolnir To Save His Mother's Life
Thor's First Time Lifting Mjolnir Forged His Unconscious Bond With The Hammer
The different sensation of this brutal beating is eventually revealed to be the Mjolnir in Thor's hand, unleashing force and lightning to obliterate his opponents (easily saving his mother in the process). But once the battle subsides, Young Thor discovers the truth. Having leapt into defense of his mother, the "unworthy" Odinson simultaneously called King Thor's Mjolnir to his hand without even a conscious thought. And without hesitation, Mjolnir answered the command.
The sequence of events confirms that this was the moment Thhor first became worthy of the weapon, marking a major moment of character development in Thor's lore. At the same time, enriching the idea of there even being a "first time" for Thor to raise Mjolnir. It might even be more accurate to say Thor became worthy by calling upon Mjolnir through his heart, more than any intentional test. And poetically, Mjolnir was simply waiting all along.
But for as incredibly powerful and meaningful as this moment really is, there are simply too many hurdles to it ever being adapted onto film. The concept of Young Thor meeting King Thor, like the stakes of a War of the Realms are ones previous Thor movies have actively avoided. With no sign of them ever starting now, this historic moment is yet another one that proves the MCU's Thor pales in comparison to the comic book original.
