Warning! Spoilers ahead for Stranger Things season 5.

Will Byers has been underutilized for years, but Stranger Things season 5 has paired him up with the perfect new friend to finally realize the potential of his character. Since Will spent most of the first season missing, he’s the most underdeveloped character in Stranger Things’ main cast, and the subsequent seasons have struggled to figure out what to do with him.

Audiences have picked up more about Will’s character from the subtext than the actual text. It became a common interpretation that Will is gay and in love with Mike, but the show has never outright confirmed it. With Will’s latest friendship in season 5, the show is finally moving closer to addressing this aspect of his character.

Will & Robin Are The Best Team-Up In Stranger Things Season 5 (So Far)

In the first few episodes of Stranger Things season 5, Will strikes up a friendship with Robin. Unlike with Will, Stranger Things hasn’t shied away from overtly depicting Robin as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. When Will catches Robin making out with her love interest Vickie, it seems to awaken something inside him and validate his own feelings toward the same sex.

Initially, Robin just wants a moment alone with Will to see if it really was him who saw her with Vickie, and make sure he won’t tell anyone. But this blossoms into a very real friendship. Will has a million and one questions for Robin, and she’s more than happy to provide the answers and guide him on his path.

Why Robin Is The Perfect Friend For Will In Stranger Things Season 5

Mike will always be Will’s best friend, but Robin is the perfect friend for him at this particular juncture in his life. As he gets older, Will is increasingly confused by his feelings and the messiness of puberty, so he needs someone to confide in, and his immature straight male friends aren’t exactly the best people to talk to.

Robin is being very open with Will about her sexuality. He’s filled with burning questions about how she figured out her sexual orientation and how she knew Vickie liked her back, and Robin is being very frank and honest in her answers. Until he got close to Robin, Will had to keep all these thoughts to himself.

Will and Robin are proving to be a pretty solid team, too. Robin is the one who sneaks Will away from Joyce’s overprotectiveness so he can make a breakthrough in the case, and it’s her advice that inspires Will to unlock his Vecna powers at the end of Stranger Things season 5, volume 1. They’re quickly becoming one of Stranger Things’ best duos.
