AUBURN — Much like he has since becoming Auburn football's interim head coach, DJ Durkin didn't have much to say about getting the full-time job after the Tigers' season-ending loss to No. 10 Alabama on Saturday, Nov. 29.

Durkin, who coached a 27-20 Iron Bowl defeat in what could be his final game at the helm of the program, deflected on the topic.

“It's really about the players," he said. "These guys worked really hard, they put in the right amount of work to go win a game. Obviously, we didn't execute well enough to do that, but it's about them. It's about those guys and the team. All that other stuff will sort itself out."

The defeat concluded Durkin's interim tenure with a 1-2 record. His lone win came the previous weekend in a 62-17 beatdown of FCS Mercer. Otherwise, much like his predecessor Hugh Freeze, he coached the Tigers to a pair of one-score losses against ranked SEC opponents. Auburn lost in overtime, 45-38, to then-No. 16 Vanderbilt, in Durkin's interim debut.

Athletics director John Cohen's search is presumably near its end. He has said from the onset he'd like to have a hire made within 48 hours of Auburn's season concluding, leaving him until Monday to reach that self-imposed deadline. Cohen has also said he'd like to retain Durkin, even if it's not as Freeze's replacement.
