PUEBLO — There was no doubt about it this time.
Wellington is the Colorado Class 2A high school football state champion after a 35-0 title-game beatdown against No. 4 Elizabeth on Nov. 29 at CSU Pueblo's ThunderBowl.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThere was absolutely no question about 2A's best team in the 2025 season. Wellington (13-0) capped off one of the most dominant campaigns you will see in Colorado high school football.
The second seed pulverized teams all fall, rolling through a redemption run following last season's controversial championship loss.
The Eagles' final scoring margin in 12 contested games this season? That would be 537-62, or 44.8 to 5.2 per game. Utter dominance.
The championship game was more coronation than a contested game.
The Eagles scored on their first five drives, forced three first-half turnovers and had a pass as the second-quarter buzzer expired that would have made it a running clock by halftime.

Gray had an early 57-yard touchdown run, tossed a touchdown pass to Cyle Kisner and ripped a fumble away on a Cardinals' handoff exchange, all before halftime.
Brayton Meglen set the early tone. The sophomore took the second snap from scrimmage 69 yards for an electric opening touchdown.
The rout was officially on early and often in a virtuosic first half. Meglen tacked on another touchdown run and Owen Gabbert got a senior sendoff with a short scoring run.

The unit allowed just 25 points in four playoff games, and no opponent scored more than two touchdowns on it this season.
All that was left was the trophy in the Eagles' talons. It's a long-awaited football state championship for many reasons.
The first Colorado football state title for a Poudre School District team since 1969.
And the former Wellington High School won 6-man state titles in 1952 and 1953 before closing in 1964. The new Wellington Middle-High School opened in 2022.

It sparked an offseason and fall dubbed the "Revenge Tour" inside the Wellington program, spurred by a "leave no doubt" mantra.
Mission officially accomplished.
The Eagles and beloved head coach Travis Peeples can finally celebrate as Colorado state champions with a special season that will be remembered for a long time up north.
