Few franchises are quite as legendary as Godzilla, which is why it's surprising that the series is still able to find new ways to explore the character and concept. As surprising as it may be, a new entry in the Godzilla franchise was just announced, and it could change the series forever.

Godzilla's official Japanese X account recently announced that a new anime series would be in production.

Worldwide Release! Godzilla New Anime Series, Production Confirmed. For the first time in the series' over 70-year history, a story with a "boy who possesses Godzilla's power" as the protagonist begins. Is that boy human, or Godzilla

Unfortunately, very little information was revealed, beyond the fact that the series will focus on a boy who possesses Godzilla powers. Alongside the announcement was an image of the young protagonist launching Godzilla's iconic atomic breath from his hands.

At the time of writing, no title, release date, streaming home, or animation studio have been confirmed.

Godzilla's Next Era Could Take The Franchise Where It's Never Been, Shonen Action

While there is still a great deal of mystery behind the new Godzilla anime, Toho has given fans one Hell of a tease with their X post.

The prospect of a young boy gaining Godzilla's powers makes the series feel like it could be leaning toward the kind of battle shonen seen with the likes of One Piece and Naruto.

There is a distinct possibility that other young characters will gain the abilities of other famous Toho monsters, setting the protagonist up to fight people with abilities from Godzilla foes like Rodan, King Ghidorah, or even Mechagodzilla.

This would undeniably be new ground for the franchise, and could be a huge hit. Classic Shonen battle series like Gachiakuta and Kaiju No. 8 are currently dominating Crunchyroll's rankings, proving that the genre is still attracting legions of fans.

What's more, the new Godzilla anime has the chance to break an unfortunate trend when it comes to adapting the most iconic kaiju.

While Godzilla has had more than a few anime adaptations, the reception to them has been lackluster. The Planet of the Monsters series of anime films was mostly panned both by fans and critics, while the more recent Singular Point had a middling reception, as evidenced by its current 56% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Singular Point, in particular, was a big disappointment, as it was produced by Studio Bones and Studio Orange, two of the most consistent anime studios working in Japan.

However, the new Godzilla anime could buck the trend, especially with its novel premise that could bring the character to new audiences who may only know of the franchise casually.

Given the smash-hit success of Godzilla Minus One, the franchise is making a big comeback. Fans can only hope that the new Godzilla anime will have as much time and attention put into it as the giant monster's recent cinematic outings.

The Godzilla franchise, spanning over six decades, follows the adventures of the titular kaiju, a colossal, prehistoric sea monster awakened and empowered by nuclear radiation. Originating in Japan, Godzilla has evolved from a destructive force of nature to a protector of humanity, battling various other giant monsters, including iconic foes like King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Mechagodzilla. The series explores themes of environmental destruction, nuclear anxiety, and human resilience. With numerous films, TV series, and an expanding universe, Godzilla remains a cultural icon, captivating audiences worldwide with its epic battles and compelling narratives.
