The Verity director offers an exciting tease about the upcoming book adaptation. The movie, set for release in 2026, is an adaptation of the 2018 Colleen Hoover thriller of the same name. The film chronicles a woman, Lowen, who is hired to be a ghostwriter for a woman named Verity, discovering shocking truths about her along the way.

Verity is directed by Michael Showalter and features Anne Hathaway in the titular role with Dakota Johnson playing the role of writer Lowen. Josh Hartnett plays Verity's wife, Jeremy, with a supporting cast that includes Brady Wagner, Daniel Echevarria, Michael Abbott Jr., and Asel Swango.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender, Showalter speaks on working with Hathaway on Verity. He spoke very highly of the actor, saying that the pair has "a really great connection creatively and collaboratively." This led to them wanting to work together on Verity.

Showalter went on to speak highly of his experience with Verity overall. He noted what a different experience it was than his other films, noting that it is a "thriller" and "quite dark and twisted." Check out the full quote from Showalter below:

ScreenRant: In the meantime, you are working with Anne Hathaway for Verity. Did one lead to the other? What has that experience been like?

Michael Showalter: She and I have a really great connection creatively and collaboratively, and we really had a wonderful experience working together on The Idea of You. We wanted to find another project to do together, and this came up.

We went and shot that movie about a year ago now, or a little bit less than that. I loved working on that, and I'm excited for people to see Verity. It's not coming out for a little while, not until next Fall, but it's a totally different kind of movie than Oh. What. Fun. or The Idea of You. It's a thriller. It's scary and suspenseful. It's quite dark and twisted, but I'm very excited and proud of that movie.

As the director alludes to, Hathaway has worked with him another time in recent years. He worked with her on the 2024 age-gap romance movie The Idea of You, which was fairly popular on Prime Video. Now, Verity will be another chance for him to work with Hathaway.

Showalter is also keeping busy in the meantime with the holiday comedy Oh. What. Fun. Set for release on December 3, the movie will kick-start Prime Video's holiday season with a story about a family reconnecting after they forget one of their key family members.

These last two Showalter films, at least, have been on the far lighter side in terms of tone. The director's latest statements acknowledge this, recognizing both the genre and tonal change.

Hathaway's career has seen her dabble across a wide range of the genre spectrum, and Verity is no such exception. She has often played lighter roles than what she is gearing up for to tackle the titular Verity. As such, this will also give audiences a different taste of the actor.

Audiences have an appetite for a good thriller, and this is especially true when it comes to Hoover adaptations. As such, if Showalter's film can live up to its "dark and twisted" promise, Verity could end up being a big hit.
