With Resident Evil 2 being the start of the survival-horror series' transition into fully-fledged modern remakes, we never got to see what the graphical upgrade of a more straightforward remaster would look like. Thankfully, thanks to the dedicated Resident Evil community, we can finally know for ourselves with the RE: Enhanced V.2.0 upgrade.
Created by SonicB00M on MODDB as an upgrade to their previous RE: Enhance mod for Resident Evil 2, the latest update massively overhauls the experience to something much closer to an official release with brand-new backgrounds, resolution, and enhanced textures. Even going as far as offering separate versions for GOG users or players using the Seamless HD Project, RE: Enhance could be the definitive way to experience the original Resident Evil 2.
Resident Evil 2 RE: ENHANCE V2.0 Is Stunning
A Well-Deserved Upgrade For One Of Resident Evil's Best Games
On top of the image clarifying resolution enhancements you would expect from a remaster project, many of the individual assets, like posters, signage, notice boards, and other environmental details, have been manually recreated to enhance the overall experience. Several menus and other in-game effects have also been manually improved or upscaled with AI as well, making the overall experience come to life even more.
Although some of the AI-upscaled assets do tend to stick out at times for foreground and background assets that likely would have been much more difficult to manually enhance, the moment-to-moment experience looks just as stunning as you would expect from a remastered Resident Evil 2.
The original creator, SonicB00M, has also worked on similar remasters for Resident Evil 1 and Resident Evil 3 as well, but you'll have to wait for the 2.0 enhancements to make their way to the new projects in the future.
Even if you can't wait, other members of the modding community have added classic ways to play with fixed camera angles and other game-changing mechanics, helping you relive a more authentic Resident Evil experience with all the bells and whistles of the remake series.
It's A Resident Evil Fan's Dream Come True
Staying Closer To The Classic Resident Evil Experience Than Its Remasters
While a remaster for Resident Evil 2 might not be as exciting as a brand-new entry in the series, it's still an incredibly exciting project to see come to life, helping to bridge the gap between the modern remakes and the original survival-horror experience.
Even if the success behind Capcom's Triple-A remakes makes it easy to see why the more true-to-form remasters ended up getting left behind, there's something special about the original games that the remakes struggle to replicate. From campier dialogue, cut content, or the stiff controls adding to the horror, it's great to see Resident Evil fans keeping the original experience alive for more players to experience.
Especially with Resident Evil Requiem promising to focus even more on the survival horror mechanics of the original games, playing a project like Resident Evil 2's RE: Enhanced mod is the perfect way to prepare for the new game's return to Raccoon City.
